Metallaphotoredox: The Merger of Photoredox and Transition Metal Catalysis

Amy Y. Chan et al.

Summary: The merger of photoredox catalysis with transition metal catalysis, known as metallaphotoredox catalysis, has become an important part of synthetic methodology. It combines the bond formation capability of transition metal catalysis with the utility of photoinduced electron and energy transfer processes. Photocatalytic substrate activation allows the involvement of simple starting materials in metal-mediated bond-forming processes, while electron or energy transfer with organometallic intermediates provides a complementary activation mode to traditional catalytic platforms.

ART-An Amino Radical Transfer Strategy for C(sp2)-C(sp3) Coupling Reactions, Enabled by Dual Photo/Nickel Catalysis

Elisabeth Speckmeier et al.

Summary: The novel concept of amino radical transfer (ART) enables the use of easily accessible and commercially available alkyl boronic esters as cross-coupling partners for aryl halides in dual photoredox/nickel catalysis mediated by visible light. This reaction shows outstanding functional group tolerance, allowing quick access to relevant scaffolds for organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry. The ART concept demonstrates an extraordinary generality and scalability, making it a valuable tool in late-stage functionalization and drug synthesis.

Generation of Functionalized Alkyl Radicals via the Direct Photoexcitation of 2,2′-(Pyridine-2,6-diyl)diphenol-Based Borates

Yusuke Miyamoto et al.

Summary: A new type of alkylborate has been developed for radical generation through direct photoexcitation, utilizing organoboronic acids or potassium trifluoroborates as reactants. The easy availability of organoboron compounds is a key advantage, and the excited states of these borates can also function as strong reductants for various transformations.
