Selectivity, Speciation, and Substrate Control in the Gold-Catalyzed Coupling of Indoles and Alkynes

Ryan G. Epton et al.

Summary: This study presents a convenient and mild method for the synthesis of vinyl indoles. High yields of 3-substituted indoles were obtained, and only one indole is added to the alkyne compared to reactions with simple alkynes. The method showed good tolerance towards different positions of indoles and ester-, amide-, and ketone-substituted alkynes.

Expedient Access to Indolyl-Substituted Tri- and Diarylmethanes and (±)-Colletotryptin E by Silica Sulfuric Acid Catalyzed Transindolylation

Jirapat Yimyaem et al.

Summary: An efficient method for synthesizing a series of nonsymmetrical bis(indolyl)methanes (BIMS) using silica-supported sulfuric acid as a catalyst has been established. This approach provides a useful strategy for the synthesis of structurally diverse BIMs and examples of nucleophilic substitution reactions, leading to a library of indolyl-substituted tri- and diarylmethanes. Moreover, this method was successfully applied in the total synthesis of the 2,3'-BIM alkaloid (+/-)-colletotryptin E with high yield.

FeCl3•6H2O as a Mild Catalyst for Nucleophilic Substitution of Symmetrical Bis(indoyl)methanes

Chayamon Chantana et al.

Summary: In this study, unsymmetrical bis(indolyl)methane and 3-alkylindole derivatives were efficiently synthesized using FeCl3·6H2O as a catalyst for nucleophilic substitution reactions. The reaction conditions were mild, and the strategy showed advantages in terms of operational ease, cost-effectiveness, environmentally-friendly catalyst, broad functional group tolerance, and scalability.

Divergent Gold Catalysis: Unlocking Molecular Diversity through Catalyst Control

Chetan C. Chintawar et al.

Summary: Gold complexes have emerged as powerful catalysts in divergent catalysis, offering unique reactivity profiles due to their tunable soft pi-acidic nature. They not only catalyze reactions of alkynes, alkenes, and allenes effectively, but also provide divergent reaction pathways over other pi-acid catalysts like Ag, Pt, Pd, Rh, Cu, In, Sc, Hg, Zn, etc. Reviews documenting such examples are sporadic, hindering the further development of this burgeoning field, thus necessitating a unified approach like Divergent Gold Catalysis (DGC) to consolidate reports and pave the way for advancement.

Short Total Synthesis of (±)-Gelliusine E and 2,3′-Bis(indolyl)ethylamines via PTSA-Catalyzed Transindolylation

Chayamon Chantana et al.

Summary: A first and successful total synthesis of the marine sponge-derived 2,3'-bis(indolyl)ethylamine alkaloid was achieved with a high overall yield. The novel strategy involved a key feature of transindolylation catalyzed by PTSA, enabling the rapid synthesis of related compounds with reduced waste. Cytotoxicity in breast cancer cells was also investigated, showing promising potential for further study.
