Chronic mechanical trauma/irritation and oral carcinoma: A systematic review showing low evidence to support an association

Monica Pentenero et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to assess whether chronic mechanical trauma can be considered a risk factor for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The study found that there is currently not enough evidence to support the role of trauma in oral carcinogenesis and more prospective cohort studies are needed to better assess the relationship between trauma and OSCC.

Oral medicine practice in Europe and Australia: Identifying practitioner characteristics and their clinical activity

Monica Pentenero et al.

Summary: Oral Medicine is a young dental specialty that deals with orofacial conditions not directly related to common tooth pathologies like dental caries or periodontal diseases. Survey data from practitioners in Europe and Australia show that clinical practice in Oral Medicine commonly involves immune-mediated disorders, potentially malignant disorders, oral mucosal infections, and chronic pain disorders, with geographical variabilities.

Summary: Overall, the prevalence of HR-HPV in OL is low in the tested countries, and there is no significant change in incidence over time. HR-HPV in OL does not appear to play a significant role in oncogenesis.

Molecular, genomic and mutational landscape of oral leukoplakia

Camile S. Farah

Summary: Oral leukoplakia (OLK) and proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) are still perplexing disorders with unclear etiology and pathogenesis. Although progress has been made in understanding these conditions, including the recognition of premalignant molecular subtypes, further research is needed to fully uncover their complexities and improve management strategies.

Aneuploidy and loss of heterozygosity as risk markers for malignant transformation in oral mucosa

Edward W. Odell

Summary: Predicting malignant transformation in oral potentially malignant disorders is crucial for targeted treatment, prognostic information, and secondary prevention. DNA ploidy and loss of heterozygosity assays have predictive value, but cannot be directly compared and are not yet capable of accurately predicting individual patients' risk of malignant transformation.

Management of oral potentially malignant disorders

Alexander Ross Kerr et al.

Summary: Managing patients with oral potentially malignant disorders is challenging due to the lack of understanding of natural history and validated predictive markers. Evidence-based health promotion is not widely embraced, and research on medical interventions often suffers from methodologic flaws and lack of focus on patient quality of life. Global networks with well-characterized patient populations are needed for better intervention trials.
