All-optical self-switching with ultralow incident laser intensity assisted by a bound state in the continuum

Zhanghua Han et al.

Summary: In this study, a new scheme of realizing all-optical switching by leveraging the phenomenon of bound state in the continuum (BIC) supported by an array of slotted silicon disks is presented. By exciting the quasi-bound state (QBIC) mode, a self-switching effect is achieved with a requirement of laser power intensity level less than 1 KW/cm(2) to change transmittance significantly. The high quality factor of the QBIC resonance and the associated large local electric field enhancement contribute to the pronounced self-switching effect.

Efficient second-harmonic generation in high Q-factor asymmetric lithium niobate metasurfaces

Lei Kang et al.

Summary: The article discusses a method to achieve efficient frequency doubling in lithium niobate nanostructures and highlights the role of high Q-factor resonances in enhancing SH conversion efficiency. LN metasurfaces with high Q-factors show high SH conversion efficiency and may serve as promising candidates for practical blue-ultraviolet light sources.

Giant Asymmetric Second-Harmonic Generation in Bianisotropic Metasurfaces Based on Bound States in the Continuum

Ehsan Mobini et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates highly asymmetric second-harmonic generation in bianisotropic AlGaAs metasurfaces, with the ability to increase the ratio of second-harmonic power for forward and backward illuminations by around four orders of magnitude. This paves the way towards directional generation of higher-order waves and potential applications in nonlinear holograms.

Broadband and Ultra-Low Threshold Optical Bistability in Guided-Mode Resonance Grating Nanostructures of Quasi-Bound States in the Continuum

Xin Li et al.

Summary: The study explores the modeling of optical bistability in all-dielectric guide-mode resonance grating (GMR) nanostructures operating at quasi-bound states in the continuum (BICs). It demonstrates the potential of these nanostructures in the field of all-optical devices, with ultra-low threshold and broadband optical bistability driven by quasi-BICs.

Ultimate conversion efficiency of second harmonic generation in all-dielectric resonators of quasi-BICs in consideration of nonlinear refraction of dielectrics

Tingyin Ning et al.

Summary: This study investigates second harmonic generation in all-dielectric resonance nanostructures with high-Q factors assisted by quasi-bound states in the continuum. The research reveals that linear transmission and SHG spectra in the resonators can change dramatically under intense pump intensities, and SHG conversion efficiency in nanostructures working at quasi-BICs is lower than traditionally expected values. The ultimate SHG conversion efficiency is determined, providing significance for the design and understanding of efficient nonlinear metasurfaces with high-Q factors.

Low-threshold and controllable nanolaser based on quasi-BIC supported by an all-dielectric eccentric nanoring structure

Weilin Bi et al.

Summary: By designing an eccentric nanoring structure with a high Q factor, a low-threshold and controllable nanolaser can be realized by supporting a quasi-bound state in the continuum with a very high Q factor that can be adjusted. Furthermore, the lasing behavior of the nanolaser can be tuned by controlling the structural parameters of the eccentric circular ring structure.
