Femtosecond laser modification of silicon carbide substrates and its influence on CMP process

Xiaozhu Xie et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on enhancing the efficiency of chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) of hard-to-process SiC substrates by irradiating them with femtosecond laser. The effects of different laser processing parameters on the surface morphology of SiC were discussed, along with the influences of surrounding conditions. It was found that the formation of Si-O compound on the laser-irradiated SiC surfaces and the creation of uniform periodic ripple structures can improve surface flatness.

Evolution of micro/nano-structural arrays on crystalline silicon carbide by femtosecond laser ablation

Ru Zhang et al.

Summary: An experimental study was conducted to investigate the evolution from micro/nano-structural arrays to V-grooves under femtosecond laser irradiations. It was found that increasing laser fluence, scan speed, or the number of scans gradually leads to this evolution, with various underlying mechanisms such as laser-induced surface instability, hatching effects, Coulomb explosions, melting, and evaporation. The study also showed that laser-induced surface changes and nanoparticle agglomeration were influenced by laser fluence, affecting the boundary between different surface structures.

Ultra-Short Pulse Lasers for Microfabrication: A Review

Gediminas Raciukaitis

Summary: Ultra-short pulse lasers, with pulse durations in the picosecond and femtosecond range, are increasingly popular in precision laser microfabrication. They offer benefits in terms of ablation processes and non-linear interactions with materials, especially in transparent materials like glass. Developing technologies and tools have made laser processing more efficient and opened up unique opportunities for machining applications.

Microfabrication and Surface Functionalization of Soda Lime Glass through Direct Laser Interference Patterning

Marcos Soldera et al.

Summary: The study explores the direct patterning of soda lime substrates using ps-pulsed laser radiation in the visible spectrum through non-linear absorption, producing line- and dot-like patterns with spatial periods between 2.3 and 9.0 μm and aspect ratios up to 0.29. Laser-induced periodic surface structures with a feature size of approximately 300 nm are also observed within these microstructures. Treated surfaces exhibit significantly modified properties, with increased hydrophilic behavior and the ability to act as relief diffraction gratings splitting incident light into diffraction modes.

Crystal cleavage, periodic nanostructure and surface modification of SiC ablated by femtosecond laser in different media

Chen Wu et al.

Summary: This study utilized femtosecond laser to etch SiC and investigated the microscopic mechanism of carrier concentration and temperature change. Results showed that the ablation threshold was related to laser pulse number and processing medium, and a mechanism model based on cleavage phenomenon was established. The processing media significantly affected the surface roughness and chemical bond characteristics of SiC.

Jiangyou Long et al.

Summary: This study achieved centimeter-scale low-damage micromachining on single-crystal 4H-SiC substrates using a diffractive optical element, while systematically investigating the effects of processing parameters on surface morphology and composition. The distribution of subsurface defects caused by fs laser processing was examined through chemical mechanical polishing.
