Difference of refractive status before and after cycloplegic refraction: the Lhasa Childhood Eye Study

Lei Li et al.

Summary: Lack of cycloplegia leads to underestimation of hyperopia, with overestimation of myopia and emmetropia. Larger hyperopic refraction exhibited greater difference between cycloplegic and noncycloplegic refraction.

Overminus Lens Therapy for Children 3 to 10 Years of Age With Intermittent Exotropia A Randomized Clinical Trial

Angela M. Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that overminus spectacles therapy improved distance control in children aged 3 to 10 with intermittent exotropia for 12 months, but the improvement was not sustained after treatment was tapered off. There was a greater myopic shift in the overminus group compared to the nonoverminus group, indicating potential side effects of overminus therapy.

Accuracy of Noncycloplegic Refraction for Detecting Refractive Errors in School-aged African Children

Alex Azuka Ilechie et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the ability of noncycloplegic autorefraction and noncycloplegic retinoscopy to detect refractive errors in school-aged African children. The results showed that noncycloplegic refraction may accurately detect astigmatism and myopia in this population, but may elicit higher myopic values and lower hyperopic values than using cycloplegic refraction.

Lag of accommodation predicts clinically significant change of spherical equivalents after cycloplegia

Cheng-Cheng Jin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate factors related to changes in spherical equivalents (Delta SE) and identify predictors of clinically significant Delta SE in Chinese children using cyclopentolate hydrochloride. The results showed that lag of accommodation (LOA) played a significant role in predicting clinically significant Delta SE, along with factors such as cycloplegic SE, age, and axial length. The study concluded that after cycloplegia with cyclopentolate, Delta SE decreases with larger LOA, longer axial length, and older age.
