Beta diversity of stream insects differs between boreal and subtropical regions, but land use does not generally cause biotic homogenization

Danielle K. Petsch et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown mixed results on the relationship between beta diversity and latitude. Our research found higher taxonomic beta diversity among subtropical streams compared to boreal streams, while functional beta diversity was similar between the two regions. Total land use was positively correlated with taxonomic and functional beta diversity among subtropical streams, while local environmental heterogeneity was positively correlated with beta diversity among boreal streams.

The legacy of forest disturbance on stream ecosystem functioning

Andre Frainer et al.

Summary: The impacts of forest clearance on forest streams may have long-term consequences, with decomposition rates of leaf litter varying with forest age. Functional diversity of litter-consuming detritivores also shows a polynomial relationship along the forest succession gradient, peaking at around 50 years. Within-stream heterogeneity in decomposition rates increases with forest age, highlighting the potential long-term effects of forest succession on stream habitats.

A synthesis of land use impacts on stream biodiversity across metrics and scales

Danielle K. Petsch et al.

Summary: Different types of land use reduce multiple components of within-stream biodiversity across scales, with urbanization consistently having the strongest effects. However, beta-diversity among streams in modified landscapes does not differ from beta-diversity observed among reference streams, suggesting little evidence for biotic homogenization. Nevertheless, assemblage composition experiences considerable species turnover between reference and modified streams.
