Sources, Characteristics, and Therapeutic Applications of Mesenchymal Cells in Tissue Engineering

Summary: Tissue engineering is a therapeutic option in regenerative medicine that mimics the cell environment and function necessary for tissue recovery or regeneration using cell sources, scaffolds, and bioreactors. Mesenchymal cells (MSCs) have gained interest as a cell source, and bone marrow-derived MSCs are the most commonly used type in tissue engineering. Immunodetection techniques are commonly used for MSCs characterization, and natural biomaterials are preferred over synthetic biomaterials for scaffold construction. This review also highlights alternatives to MSCs derived from other tissues and strategies to improve regenerative medicine.
