Soil carbon and nitrogen stocks in nitrogen-fertilized grass and legume-grass forage systems

L. S. da Silva et al.

Summary: Soil management practices have significant impacts on carbon and nitrogen pools in grasslands. Year-round forage systems based on N-fertilized grasses accumulate more plant biomass and soil carbon and nitrogen compared to legume-grass mixtures.

Direct and plant community mediated effects of management intensity on annual nutrient leaching risk in temperate grasslands

Antonios Apostolakis et al.

Summary: Grassland management intensity has direct and indirect effects on nutrient leaching, by altering nutrient inputs and outputs, as well as the characteristics of plant and microbial communities. This study measured nutrient leaching in 150 managed grasslands and used structural equation modeling to investigate the mechanisms behind the effects of management intensity on nutrient leaching. The results showed that management intensity was positively associated with nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate leaching risk, but negatively associated with sulphate leaching risk. Additionally, intensification of management increased the leaching risk of inorganic nitrogen and was related to plant community traits and stoichiometry. Maintaining and restoring diverse plant communities may help mitigate the increased leaching risk caused by management intensity.

Soil greenhouse gas emissions and grazing management in northern temperate grasslands

Zilong Ma et al.

Summary: The study found that adaptive multi-paddock grazing does not reduce greenhouse gas emissions from grasslands, and that the emissions are instead influenced by specific management attributes, environmental conditions, and soil properties.

Above- and belowground biodiversity jointly tighten the P cycle in agricultural grasslands

Yvonne Oelmann et al.

Summary: Biodiversity plays a crucial role in increasing grassland productivity and nutrient exploitation, reducing the need for fertilisers. Higher above- and belowground biodiversity can promote phosphorus cycling in agricultural grasslands, providing ecological and economic benefits. The relationship between biodiversity and phosphorus cycling is complex and promoting biodiversity can have win-win outcomes for farmers and biodiversity conservation efforts.
