Application of sub-miniaturized bending tests to extract tensile properties from neutron-irradiated metallic alloys

Alexander Bakaev et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the applicability of sub-miniaturized three-point bending testing for extracting tensile plastic properties of metallic materials, such as yield stress and work hardening rate. Finite element method simulations were used to validate the correlation between flexural stress-strain response in 3PB tests and yield stress in tensile tests, as well as to develop an inverse FEM procedure to extract yield stress and work hardening rate. The accuracy of the extracted tensile properties using both methods was discussed, along with the estimation of the number of 3PB tests required to reach a target precision.

Neutron irradiation-enhanced grain growth in tungsten and tungsten alloys

Hanns Gietl et al.

Summary: This study provides experimental evidence of radiation-enhanced recrystallization in tungsten and undoped tungsten-rhenium alloys under fusion-relevant environments. It is found that potassium or lanthanum doping in tungsten alloys improves resistance to radiation-enhanced grain growth. The study also highlights the importance of considering radiation-enhanced recrystallization in the design and application of tungsten plasma-facing components in future nuclear fusion reactors.

Plastic deformation in advanced tungsten-based alloys for fusion applications studied by mechanical testing and TEM

Andrii Dubinko et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of various tungsten grades for applications in a nuclear fusion environment were assessed in this study. The research focused on bending tests, microstructural analysis, and TEM observation of different tungsten-based materials at 600 degrees C. The obtained data will be crucial for assessing the impact of neutron irradiation on the materials.

Neutron irradiation hardening across ITER diverter tungsten armor

D. Terentyev et al.

Summary: In this study, neutron irradiation and subsequent hardness measurements were performed on tungsten grades at temperatures reaching up to 1200 degrees C. The results showed that even at one third of the melting point, neutron exposure can increase hardness by 40% to 70%, depending on the grade. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed that the hardening at 1200 degrees C is mainly attributed to the presence of dislocation loops and a high density of voids.

Ductile to brittle transition temperature of advanced tungsten alloys for nuclear fusion applications deduced by miniaturized three-point bending tests

Chao Yin et al.

Summary: A study was conducted on the DBTT and microstructure of various pure tungsten grades and tungsten alloys under neutron irradiation. Potassium doped tungsten alloys exhibited the lowest DBTT, followed by other reinforced tungsten grades. The microstructure and grain orientation were found to significantly impact the DBTT, emphasizing the importance of optimizing manufacturing processes based on grain shape and boundaries.

Summary: This contribution presents the results of recent neutron irradiation experiments on pure tungsten in the material test reactor BR2 in Belgium. Various irradiation conditions were applied to assess the effects on mechanical properties, revealing a considerable shift in the ductile to brittle transition temperature in the high-temperature region even at low damage doses.
