This study investigates the diversity of AMF species in aquatic ecosystems in the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. The researchers identified 10 AMF species that have not been previously recorded in aquatic systems and provided morphological, ecological, and geographic data on these species.
Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF), phylum Glomeromycota, form a mutualistic as-sociation with terrestrial and aquatic plant roots. Aquatic ecosystems are considerably less explored in terms of AMF diversity than terrestrial ones. Despite the few inventories, more than 100 AMF species have already been detected under lentic, lotic, wetlands or estuarine conditions. During an inventory of AMF in two lentic (Arituba and Carcar?? Lagoons) and two lotic environments (Pium River and Boa Cica Stream) of the phytogeographic domain Atlantic Forest, N??sia Floresta/Rio Grande do Norte/Brazil, in the dry (December 2016) and wet (July 2017) seasons, 10 AMF species not previously recorded in aquatic systems were detected: Acaulospora herrerae, A. reducta, A. spinosissima, Corymbiglomus globiferum, Dentiscutata hawaiiensis, Glomus glomerulatum, G. spinuliferum, G. trufemii, Intraornatospora intraornata, and Paraglomus brasilianum. In this work, we reported the occurrence of these species and provided morphological, ecological and geo-data on them.
