Forced vibration of two-degrees-of-freedom machine tool feed system with clearance and friction

Summary: The feed system of machine tool, with consideration of clearance and friction, is analyzed using a two-degrees-of-freedom dynamical model with approximate analytical solutions verified by numerical methods. The stability of the system is determined by the maximum real part of the eigenvalues, where increasing friction decreases amplitude and clearance decreases resonance frequency, while increasing lead increases resonance peak. The numerical simulation shows lead screw chatter at maximum or minimum vibration angle displacement when the worktable is at the working point.
