SAMBA controls cell division rate during maize development

Pan Gong et al.

Summary: SAMBA has been identified as a plant-specific regulator of the anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C) in Arabidopsis and maize. Two samba genome edited mutants in maize showed growth defects, with samba-1 representing a knockout allele and samba-3 producing a truncated protein that still interacted with APC/C but with altered activity. This suggests a dosage-dependent role for SAMBA in controlling developmental processes.

SlKIX8 and SlKIX9 are negative regulators of leaf and fruit growth in tomato

Gwen Swinnen et al.

Summary: Plant organ size and shape are regulated by complex gene networks involving PEAPOD (PPD) and KINASE-INDUCIBLE DOMAIN INTERACTING (KIX) proteins in rosid clade species. Loss-of-function of SlKIX8 and SlKIX9 in tomato leads to enlarged dome-shaped leaves with increased expression of PPD target genes. Additionally, the mutants exhibit enlarged fruits with increased pericarp thickness due to cell expansion.

Evolution and conserved functionality of organ size and shape regulator PEAPOD

Ruth Cookson et al.

Summary: Transcriptional regulator PEAPOD (PPD) and its binding partners are found in a wide range of plants, controlling organ size and shape. The functionality of PPD is conserved in diverse plant taxa, including basal angiosperms, gymnosperms, and monocots. The absence of PPD in grasses is still unclear, but potential orthologues have been identified in close relatives. Understanding the loss of PPD in grasses will provide insights into the evolution of this plant family.

Fine Mapping of a Vigor QTL in Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) Reveals a Potential Role for Ca4_TIFY4B in Regulating Leaf and Seed Size

Duong T. Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study defined the size of a major vigor quantitative trait locus (QTL) on chickpea chromosome 4 and identified the gene Ca4_TIFY4B as a key regulator of leaf and seed size. A naturally occurring variant of the TIFY family in plants was also discovered. These findings provide valuable molecular markers for selecting desired seed and plant organ sizes in chickpea.

Modulation of the DA1 pathway in maize shows that translatability of information from Arabidopsis to crops is complex

Pan Gong et al.

Summary: Modern agriculture is facing challenges in meeting the increasing demands for food and raw materials due to rapid population growth and climate change. In maize, the DA1, DAR1, and BB gene families are controlled by ubiquitination and may regulate organ size, although the effects are less obvious compared to Arabidopsis.

Post-translational modifications regulate the activity of the growth-restricting protease DA1

Ying Chen et al.

Summary: Plants play a crucial role as a primary food source and potential renewable energy resource. The final size of plant organs is determined by the coordination between cell proliferation and expansion, with the protease DA1 playing a key role in regulating cell proliferation duration and final organ size. The complex molecular mechanisms involving DA1 and its interacting proteins provide insights into fine-tuning organ size and hold potential for identifying substrate cleavage events in a biological context.

The integration of leaf-derived signals sets the timing of vegetative phase change in maize, a process coordinated by epigenetic remodeling

Krista Osadchuk et al.

Summary: After germination, maize plants go through a series of developmental stages, including a transition from juvenile to adult phase during the vegetative phase change (VPC) regulated by miR156 and miR172. Leaf-derived signals interact with hormonal, stress, and sugar signals in maize to influence the epigenetic modifications during VPC, which play a role in managing the distinct global gene expression patterns of each phase.

Carl R. Simmons et al.

Summary: Corteva AgriscienceTM conducted a discovery research program to identify biotech leads for improving maize Agronomic Traits, resulting in a diverse set of DNA cassette constructs involving approximately 1671 genes. Field testing of these transformed maize events from 2000 to 2018 demonstrated improved yield in elite maize breeding germplasm. At least 22 validated gene leads with diverse molecular and physiological functions were identified, providing insights for crop improvement in maize and potentially other crops.

Drought affects the rate and duration of organ growth but not inter-organ growth coordination

Lennart Verbraeken et al.

Summary: Prolonged drought reduces the growth rate of individual maize organs, but does not affect the organized succession of maximal growth rates of leaves, stems, and ears. Different components of seed yield are negatively impacted by distinct drought treatments, providing information for future climate-resilient crop breeding.
