Ustilago maydis effector Jsi1 interacts with Topless corepressor, hijacking plant jasmonate/ethylene signaling

Martin Darino et al.

Summary: This study characterized the Ustilago maydis effector protein Jasmonate/Ethylene signaling inducer 1 (Jsi1), showing its interaction with plant corepressor TPL/TPR proteins and activation of the ERF branch in the JA/ET signaling pathway. The induction of the ERF branch by Jsi1 leads to increased susceptibility to biotrophic pathogens in plants. The identification of EAR-motif-containing effector candidates from various fungal species suggests a convergent evolution of effectors modulating the TPL/TPR corepressor hub.

Hormones as go-betweens in plant microbiome assembly

Ruth Eichmann et al.

Summary: The interaction between plants and microbial communities is crucial for plant adaptation in complex ecosystems. The composition and diversity of microbial communities vary between plant and soil compartments, indicating a dynamic and interactive relationship influenced by environmental factors. Hormones play a key role in shaping plant microbiomes and contribute to the diversity and functionality of plant ecosystems.

Comparative transcriptome profiling identifies maize line specificity of fungal effectors in the maize-Ustilago maydis interaction

Selma Schurack et al.

Summary: Through quantitative scoring of disease symptoms in 26 maize lines and RNA sequencing analysis, it was found that different maize lines show specific cellular process responses to Ustilago maydis infection. Analysis of 406 genes identified 102 encoding predicted effector proteins with differential expression between maize lines.

Opposing functions of the plant TOPLESS gene family during SNC1-mediated autoimmunity

Christopher M. Garner et al.

Summary: This study explores the regulatory mechanisms of the plant immune system, revealing additive genetic interactions between SRFR1 and TOPLESS family members TPR2 and TPR3 in negatively regulating SNC1-dependent phenotypes. The findings highlight the diverse functions of individual TOPLESS family members in Arabidopsis and contribute to the understanding of complex regulatory processes in plant immunity.

Cross-species analysis between the maize smut fungi Ustilago maydis and Sporisorium reilianum highlights the role of transcriptional change of effector orthologs for virulence and disease

Weiliang Zuo et al.

Summary: The regulation of effector orthologs during host colonization of Ustilago maydis and Sporisorium reilianum provides insights into the evolution of different infection strategies. By tracking infection progress and using cross-species RNA-sequencing analyses, differentially regulated one-to-one effector orthologs were identified, potentially reflecting distinct disease development strategies. Additionally, differential expression of functionally conserved genes and possible neofunctionalization of orthogroups contribute to species-specific adaptation and symptom development in related pathogens.

The Pleiades are a cluster of fungal effectors that inhibit host defenses

Fernando Navarrete et al.

Summary: Biotrophic plant pathogens secrete effector proteins to manipulate host physiology, with pleiades as a cluster of ten genes that suppress ROS production in infected tissue. This study highlights the functional relevance of effector gene organization and the redundancy and mechanistic diversity in effector functions.
