Clinical Spectrum of Children with Acute Hepatitis of Unknown Cause

Chayarani Kelgeri et al.

Summary: Between January and April 2022, a liver-transplantation center in the U.K. received a total of 44 children with acute hepatitis, with 6 of them undergoing liver transplantation. Most of the children presented with symptoms such as jaundice, vomiting, and diarrhea. Human adenovirus was detected in a majority of the children, although its role in the pathogenesis of the illness is still unknown.

Summary: HAdV is a significant pathogen in immunocompromised patients, especially after allo-HSCT, and can lead to severe infections such as hepatitis. Unfortunately, HAdV hepatitis is often difficult to diagnose early due to the lack of characteristic symptoms, which can result in rapid progression and high mortality rates.

Summary: Elevated ALT in children with SARS-CoV-2 is associated with a more severe disease course, including higher rates of multiorgan dysfunction and longer hospitalizations. Male gender and Black race were more likely to be associated with elevated ALT in MIS-C.
