Correlates of testosterone change as men age

Ricky Kanabar et al.

Summary: The literature on testosterone (T) in men reports diverse correlates of T, with some changing as men age. The diurnal cycle of T weakens among older men. Single men have higher T than married men, but this difference lessens with age. Elevated T among smokers decreases with age. The inverse relationship between obesity and T is consistent across different age groups. There is disagreement about the course of decline of T with age, but the study found a steep decline around age 30, a possible rebound around age 50, and then relatively stable levels. Correlations involving health become stronger among older men.

Association between fasting blood glucose and thyroid stimulating hormones and suicidal tendency and disease severity in patients with major depressive disorder

Weiting Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated and compared thyroid dysfunction and diabetes between suicide attempters and non-suicide attempters in first-episode drug-naive MDD patients. The results showed that suicide attempters had higher scores on HAMD, HAMA and PANSS psychotic symptoms, as well as higher levels of TSH, glucose, A-TG, A-TPO, TC, TG, LDL-C, indicating TSH, A-TG, A-TPO, TC, TG, and LDL-C could be promising biomarkers of suicide risk in MDD.

Catalytic Reaction Model of Suicide

Pamela McPherson et al.

Summary: Suicide is a devastating outcome of unresolved issues that affect mental health, general wellbeing and socioeconomic stress. This article proposes a model that aims to unify the biology and behavioral dimensions of suicidal behavior, viewing it as a catalytic reaction that may lead to suicide depending on the conditions. It explores the role of genetic risk factors and biological substrates, such as threat assessment, motivation, and impulsivity.

Thyroid Function across the Lifespan: Do Age-Related Changes Matter?

John P. Walsh

Summary: Circulating concentrations of TSH and T4 are tightly regulated and influenced by genetics, environment, and epigenetics. Thyroid function displays complex and dynamic patterns throughout life, with sexual dimorphism. In older adults, TSH increases with age without a corresponding decrease in free T4, suggesting a change in TSH setpoint. Mild subclinical hypothyroidism in older adults has no health impact, supporting the implementation of age-related TSH reference ranges in adults.

Evaluation of leptin levels in serum as a biomarker for suicide behavior: systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: The meta-analysis revealed that individuals with suicide behavior have lower levels of serum leptin. Further studies are needed to confirm this finding and establish the exact relationship between leptin levels and the increased risk of suicide behavior.

Relation between self-perceived stress, psychopathological symptoms and the stress hormone prolactin in emerging psychosis

Erich Studerus et al.

Summary: The study found that CHR-P and FEP patients had significantly higher levels of self-perceived stress and prolactin compared to healthy controls, and that self-perceived stress was significantly positively associated with affective symptoms but not with other symptoms. Some patients had hyperprolactinemia, but it was not necessarily caused by stress.

Yazmin Hernandez-Diaz et al.

Summary: The study found that serum oxytocin levels were significantly lower in individuals with schizophrenia compared to the control group, while levels in cerebrospinal fluid were significantly higher. This suggests that dysregulation of the oxytocin system may play a role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.

Effects of weariness of life, suicide ideations and suicide attempt on HPA axis regulation in depression

Johannes M. Hennings et al.

Summary: The study found that patients who were weary of life showed an increased response in ACTH and cortisol following stress hormone tests, while there was no significant difference in stress hormone response between suicide attempters and ideators and non-suicidal patients. Repeated suicide attempts in patients' history were associated with more pronounced stress hormone attenuation.
