A developmental reduction of the excitation:inhibition ratio in association cortex during adolescence

Bart Larsen et al.

Summary: This study used pharmacological fMRI technique to empirically generate a model of E:I ratio based on functional connectivity and investigated the development of the E:I ratio in association cortex during adolescence. The findings revealed a reduction of the E:I ratio in association cortex during adolescence, which was related to psychopathology.

Diminished reward responsiveness is associated with lower reward network GluCEST: an ultra-high field glutamate imaging study

Valerie J. Sydnor et al.

Summary: This study provides new evidence that glutamate levels within the reward network contribute to individual differences in reward responsiveness. The association between reward network glutamate levels and reward responsiveness is driven by subcortical regions and areas encoding the salience of valenced stimuli. These findings offer insights into the mechanisms underlying reward network hypofunction and may have implications for the development of treatments for anhedonia.

Neurodevelopment of the association cortices: Patterns, mechanisms, and implications for psychopathology

Valerie J. Sydnor et al.

Summary: The development of the human brain cortex is a prolonged process that progresses from lower-order functions to higher-order functions, conforming to a hierarchical pattern of organization. This developmental program enhances feature variation between different regions, but also carries risks for diverse developmental psychopathologies.
