Towards a unified theory of emotional contagion in rodents-A meta-analysis

Julen Hernandez-Lallement et al.

Summary: This study leverages 80 years of emotional contagion research in rodents and performs the first meta-analysis on this topic. The results show that rats and mice are both capable of emotional contagion, but there are differences in how various factors modulate empathy in these species. For example, rats are more sensitive to the length of familiarity and prior experience with emotional stimuli increases fear contagion response. Additionally, missing one sensory modality reduces emotional contagion in animals from both species.

Large-scale neural recordings call for new insights to link brain and behavior

Anne E. Urai et al.

Summary: Neuroscientists have the ability to measure activity from more neurons using emerging tools and technologies, posing challenges to traditional theoretical frameworks and providing new insights. Connecting brain-wide neural recordings to computation and behavior is a current challenge, with the need for new theoretical approaches to understand brain function. Advances in neural recordings and theory development are expected to contribute to a critical improvement in our understanding of the brain.

Hippocampal-amygdala memory circuits govern experience-dependent observational fear

Joseph Terranova et al.

Summary: The ability to vicariously experience fear in others, known as observational fear (OF), is crucial for survival and functioning in society. This study reveals that the hippocampal-basolateral amygdala (HPC-BLA) circuits in mice, not involving the anterior cingulate cortex, mediate the experience-dependent OF. Dorsal HPC neurons encode fear memory engram cells in the BLA that are critical for OF, while ventral HPC neurons respond to familiar aversive situations in others to reactivate fear memory engram cells in the BLA and elicit OF. This study provides new insights into empathic behaviors and their neural mechanisms.

Oxytocin neurons mediate the effect of social isolation via the VTA circuits

Stefano Musardo et al.

Summary: The study revealed that 1 week of social isolation in male mice increased social interaction while decreasing social habituation and preference for social novelty, accompanied by changes in neural activity and synaptic plasticity. These effects were reversed by chemogenetic inhibition of oxytocin neurons in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus.

Summary: The study showed that mice can transfer experiences of pain and analgesia during social interactions, with the anterior cingulate cortex and its projections to the nucleus accumbens playing a crucial role. However, the social transfer of fear depends on the connections between the anterior cingulate cortex and the basolateral amygdala, not the ACC -> NAc circuit.

Affective empathy and prosocial behavior in rodents

Seong-Wook Kim et al.

Summary: Empathy is crucial for humans as social animals, involving the cognitive process of perceiving and sharing others' affective state through emotional contagion. Studies on the observational fear assay in animals have shown that this behavior is mediated by neural circuits processing the affective dimension of direct pain experiences. Mice can also respond to social stimuli induced by emotional changes in other mice, which may not rely on affective pain circuits. Future research should explore how various neural circuits contribute to integrating different dimensions of affective empathy.

Reduced sociability and social agency encoding in adult Shank3-mutant mice are restored through gene re-expression in real time

Daniel K. Lee et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that disruption of Shank3 gene in adult male mice alters the encoding dynamics of neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), leading to impaired social behavior. Restoration of Shank3 expression reverses this encoding imbalance, ultimately enhancing sociability.
