How Resilient Is Reading to Letter Rotations? A Parafoveal Preview Investigation

Maria Fernandez-Lopez et al.

Summary: This study examines how visual distortion, specifically letter rotation, affects the mapping from visual input to abstract word representation during normal reading. The results from a parafoveal preview experiment suggest that as the rotation angle of individual letters in previews increases, the advantage of the identity preview condition on eye fixation times for the target word decreases progressively.

The time course of processing handwritten words: An ERP investigation

Marta Vergara-Martinez et al.

Summary: Behavioral studies have shown that the legibility of handwritten script can hinder visual word recognition, with lexical effects magnified in difficult handwriting conditions. In the present experiment, an early effect of word-frequency in the N170 was observed in the difficult-to-read handwritten condition, suggesting increased attentional deployment and enhanced top-down effects in visual word processing.
