Interactions Between Age, Sex, Menopause, and Brain Structure at Midlife: A UK Biobank Study

Stephanie Than et al.

Summary: The study found significant interactions between age and sex or menopausal status among middle-aged women, which play an important role in explaining the MRI biomarkers of dementia.

Use of menopausal hormone therapy and risk of dementia: nested case-control studies using QResearch and CPRD databases

Yana Vinogradova et al.

Summary: This study investigates the risks of developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease in women exposed to different types of menopausal hormone therapy for varying durations. Overall, no increased risks of developing dementia were observed, but there was a slightly increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease among long-term users of oestrogen-progestogen therapies.

Neuroanatomical norms in the UK Biobank: The impact of allometric scaling, sex, and age

Camille Michele Williams et al.

Summary: This study aimed to generate neuroanatomical norms and individual markers from the UK Biobank data, and examine the effects of sex, age, and brain allometry on cerebral measures. It found that sex differences existed in 67% of cerebral measures, and brain measures generally decreased with age, with effects varying across regions and sexes.

Genetic insights into biological mechanisms governing human ovarian ageing

Katherine S. Ruth et al.

Summary: A study identified 290 genetic determinants of ovarian aging, associated with DNA damage response processes and loss-of-function variants in key DDR-associated genes. Experimental models showed that these DDR processes act across the life-course to shape ovarian reserve and its rate of depletion. Extending reproductive life in women may improve bone health and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, but it could increase the risk of hormone-sensitive cancers.

Age at Menopause and Risk of Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke

Sabrina J. G. C. Welten et al.

Summary: This study found that earlier menopause is associated with increased risk of stroke in women, with a 2% lower stroke risk for each year menopause was delayed. The association with stroke risk was stronger for natural menopause.
