Continuous speech segmentation by L1 and L2 speakers of English: the role of syntactic and prosodic cues

Aleksandra Dobrego et al.

Summary: This study investigated how native and fluent users of English segment continuous speech and to what extent they use sound-related and structure-related cues. Results showed that there were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of segmentation strategies, efficiency, and agreement. The study suggests that native speakers do not have an advantage over fluent speakers in higher-level speech processes, and that language experience at high levels of fluency does not significantly impact natural speech comprehension.

Acoustically Driven Cortical δ Oscillations Underpin Prosodic Chunking

Summary: This study provides evidence for the role of delta oscillators in segmenting phrase-sized chunks, showing that prosodic chunking of phrase-sized acoustic segments is correlated with acoustic-driven delta oscillations based on magnetoencephalography data.

Summary: The study revealed the difficulty in memorizing segments longer than 2.7 seconds in speech processing. By manipulating speech rate, the researchers found that delta-band oscillations at a specific angle in the brain can impact segmentation and comprehension of sentences, leading to later errors.
