Enhancing the spatial resolution of hyperpolarized carbon-13 MRI of human brain metabolism using structure guidance

Matthias J. Ehrhardt et al.

Summary: The proposed method enhances the 3D resolution of C-13-MRI by utilizing structural information from H-1-MRI. Validation was conducted using in silico, in vitro, and in vivo data, showing that 3D super-resolution outperforms 2D approaches, revealing hidden information and improving anatomical definition in metabolic imaging.

Four features of temporal patterns characterize similarity among individuals and molecules by glucose ingestion in humans

Suguru Fujita et al.

Summary: Oral glucose ingestion induces systemic changes in blood metabolites and hormones related to glucose, amino acids, and lipids. This study measured the temporal patterns of 83 metabolites and 7 hormones in response to glucose ingestion in 20 healthy human subjects. The findings highlight the differences between individuals and among molecules in the temporal patterns of blood molecules induced by oral glucose ingestion.

Comparison of hyperpolarized 13C and non-hyperpolarized deuterium MRI approaches for imaging cerebral glucose metabolism at 4.7 T

Cornelius von Morze et al.

Summary: This study directly compared two isotopic metabolic imaging approaches, HP C-13 MRI and DMI, for imaging different segments of cerebral glucose metabolism at 4.7 T. The results showed that while HP-C-13 MRI had better SNR and spatial resolution compared to DMI, the latter provided maps of lactate and Glx production, albeit with poorer spectral discrimination.

The use of hyperpolarised 13C-MRI in clinical body imaging to probe cancer metabolism

Ramona Woitek et al.

Summary: Metabolic reprogramming, particularly the Warburg effect, is a hallmark of cancer and can be utilized for clinical imaging through positron emission tomography (PET). A new emerging method, carbon-13 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with hyperpolarised [1-C-13]pyruvate injection, shows potential in noninvasive imaging of altered metabolism and has demonstrated safety and feasibility in translational studies. This technique offers unique information and applications in oncological body MRI, including disease characterisation, tumour heterogeneity mapping, and early response assessment.

Deuterium metabolic imaging in the human brain at 9.4 Tesla with high spatial and temporal resolution

Loreen Ruhm et al.

Summary: This study presents the first highly spatially resolved deuterium metabolic imaging (DMI) measurements of the human brain using a dedicated coil design and a fast chemical shift imaging (CSI) sequence at an ultrahigh field strength of 9.4 T. The H-2 metabolic measurements allowed for investigation of glucose metabolism in healthy subjects with a temporal resolution of 10 minutes. The results showed that the metabolism of deuterated glucose could be clearly visualized in high resolution metabolite images over the entire human brain, highlighting the benefits of ultrahigh field strength for X-nuclei MRSI like DMI.

Deuterium metabolic imaging - Back to the future

Henk M. De Feyter et al.

Summary: Deuterium metabolic spectroscopy and imaging are simple and robust MR-based methods for mapping metabolism with high temporal and/or spatial resolution. These methods offer advantages including high MR sensitivity, elimination of the need for water or lipid suppression, and relative immunity to magnetic field inhomogeneity. This makes them highly promising tools for both research and clinical imaging.

The Importance of Mitochondrial Pyruvate Carrier in Cancer Cell Metabolism and Tumorigenesis

Ainhoa Ruiz-Iglesias et al.

Summary: Cancer cells exhibit high glycolytic metabolism, with the regulation of the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) being crucial in promoting tumor growth and affecting various aspects of tumorigenesis. Dysfunctional MPC can lead to increased glycolysis and aggressive tumor characteristics, while controversy exists regarding the role of MPC in cancer progression. Impaired MPC function can also result in acidification of the tumor microenvironment and support tumor growth through angiogenesis and immunosuppression.

Simultaneous Recording of the Uptake and Conversion of Glucose and Choline in Tumors by Deuterium Metabolic Imaging

Andor Veltien et al.

Summary: The study investigated the uptake and conversion of [H-2(9)]choline and [6,6'-H-2(2)]glucose in tumors using deuterium metabolic imaging. Results showed that the signals of these compounds could be observed separately in tumor H-2 spectra, with choline signal increasing initially and then decreasing or remaining stable, while glucose signal declined over time. This research suggests that simultaneous detection of choline and glucose in tumors has clinical potential for tumor characterization.
