N-Acetyl Transferase, Shati/Nat8l, in the Dorsal Hippocampus Suppresses Aging-induced Impairment of Cognitive Function in Mice

Hajime Miyanishi et al.

Summary: With the increase in the elderly population worldwide, the occurrence of cognitive dysfunction is expected to rise. However, the detailed mechanism of cognitive impairment associated with aging is still poorly understood due to numerous confounding factors. In this study, the researchers found that the lack of expression of Shati/Nat8l in mice resulted in a decline in cognitive function during development, and overexpression of Shati/Nat8l in the dorsal hippocampus reversed the cognitive dysfunction observed in aged mice. This suggests that Shati/Nat8l and NAA in the dorsal hippocampus may be potential targets for the treatment of cognitive impairment.

Clinical Experience With Gene Therapy in Older Patients With Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Summary: Most infants over seven months treated with Onasemnogene experienced acute viral symptoms and thrombocytopenia, but all showed motor improvements. The drug appears to be effective and well tolerated in this age group, though side effects were more common, severe, and prolonged compared to original trials. Further research is needed to understand the impact of age, weight, and other factors on side effects development.
