Autonomous fuelled directional rotation about a covalent single bond

Stefan Borsley et al.

Summary: In this study, a catalysis-driven molecular motor capable of continuous 360 degrees directional rotation powered by chemical fuel was demonstrated. The directionality of the motor is influenced by the chirality of the catalyst and fuel, and can be easily reversed.

Insights from an information thermodynamics analysis of a synthetic molecular motor

Shuntaro Amano et al.

Summary: The framework of information thermodynamics allows us to quantitatively relate information to other thermodynamic parameters and reveals the generation of energy and information flow in the chemical to mechanical process. This is of great significance for understanding the thermodynamic level of molecular motors and has practical implications for machine design.

Chemically Fueled Self-Assembly in Biology and Chemistry

Krishnendu Das et al.

Summary: Life is a non-equilibrium state of matter sustained by energy expenditure, mostly utilizing chemical energy stored in molecules. Understanding the transfer of chemical energy to biochemical processes is crucial for developing artificial systems with life-like processes. Strategies for controlling the structural organization of organic molecules have been identified based on distinguishable physical-organic foundations, with examples from biology and chemistry illustrating their practical implementation and unique opportunities.

Chemical Fueling Enables Molecular Complexification of Self-Replicators**

Shuo Yang et al.

Summary: Research has shown that in systems of self-replicating molecules, simple and fast replicators can be replaced by more complex and slower ones, with the latter being more proficient in catalysis. The use of chemical fueling can maintain replicator systems out of equilibrium, leading to the emergence of more complex replicators that enable open-ended evolution.

Artificial Supramolecular Pumps Powered by Light

Stefano Corra et al.

Summary: This study describes the design, synthesis, and properties of pseudorotaxanes, with a focus on the photoinduced energy ratcheting at the basis of the pumping mechanism. Using NMR spectroscopy, the dissipative non-equilibrium state generated by light irradiation was observed. Additionally, fine changes in the axle structure were shown to improve the performance of the motor, highlighting the modularity and versatility of this minimalist pump design.

Nonequilibrium thermodynamics of light-induced reactions

Emanuele Penocchio et al.

Summary: This study extends nonequilibrium thermodynamics theory by incorporating incoherent light as a source of free energy. By using a local equilibrium assumption to derive the chemical potential of photons, the thermodynamic potential and forces driving light-reacting chemical systems out-of-equilibrium are identified. The research analyzes two paradigmatic photochemical mechanisms and expresses the findings in terms of commonly measured experimental quantities through a thermodynamic coarse-graining procedure.

Second-Generation Light-Fueled Supramolecular Pump

Martina Canton et al.

Summary: The research describes the modular design of a pseudorotaxane-based supramolecular pump and its photochemically driven autonomous nonequilibrium operation in a dissipative regime. These properties are a result of careful engineering of the energy maxima and minima along the threading coordinate and their light-triggered modulation, making this second-generation system amenable to functionalization for integration into more complex devices.

A catalysis-driven artificial molecular pump

Shuntaro Amano et al.

Summary: This study introduces an autonomous chemically fueled information ratchet that continuously pumps crown ether macrocycles from bulk solution onto a molecular axle without the need for further intervention. By tuning the dynamics of the processes, the molecular machine is able to move macrocycles from their lowest energy state in the solution to a higher energy state on the axle, maintaining out-of-equilibrium [n]rotaxanes as long as unreacted fuel is present.
