In Vivo Pulsatility Measurement of Cerebral Microcirculation in Rodents Using Dynamic Ultrasound Localization Microscopy

Chloe Bourquin et al.

Summary: Increased pulse pressure from arterial stiffening and cardiovascular disease may cause brain damage and cognitive decline. DULM, a novel imaging approach, can provide high-resolution imaging of pulsatility propagation in the whole rodent brain, improving our understanding of the link between pulsatility and cognitive decline.

Diversity of neurovascular coupling dynamics along vascular arbors in layer II/III somatosensory cortex

Ravi L. Rungta et al.

Summary: This study found functional diversity in neuronal activation-triggered vascular events not only between different brain regions but also at the level of different vascular arbours within supragranular layers of the cerebral cortex. The spatial-temporal sequence of vascular events showed significant variability across compartments of different vascular arbours.

Dynamic Myocardial Ultrasound Localization Angiography

Philippe Cormier et al.

Summary: Dynamic Myocardial Ultrasound Localization Angiography (MULA) is an ultrasound-based imaging modality designed to improve the diagnosis and treatment monitoring of coronary pathologies by mapping and measuring flow from intramyocardial arterioles and capillaries. This framework combines mapping of microvascular flow dynamics triggered by an electrocardiogram with a novel Lagrangian beamformer based on non-rigid motion registration algorithm to correct large myocardial motion and deformation. The MULA framework enables non-invasive imaging of the angioarchitecture and dynamics of intramyocardial flow in vessels as small as a few tens of microns in vivo.

Bedside functional monitoring of the dynamic brain connectivity in human neonates

Jerome Baranger et al.

Summary: This study utilizes functional ultrasound for bedside deep brain resting-state functional connectivity imaging in neonates, revealing interhemispheric connectivity in preterm newborns and fine-grain correlations within brain tissue. Furthermore, decreased occurrence of thalamo-cortical networks is observed in very preterm neonates compared to control term newborns, suggesting potential applications for early brain function monitoring.

Whole-Brain 3D Activation and Functional Connectivity Mapping in Mice using Transcranial Functional Ultrasound Imaging

Adrien Bertolo et al.

Summary: Functional ultrasound (fUS) imaging is a novel brain imaging technique that allows high-sensitivity measurement of cerebral blood volume and 3D mapping of brain activation with unmatched spatio-temporal resolution. This technique is fully compatible with awake and behaving animal experiments, providing a simple and reliable protocol for whole-brain fUS imaging in both anesthetized and awake mice.

Transcranial ultrafast ultrasound localization microscopy of brain vasculature in patients

Charlie Demene et al.

Summary: The use of ultrafast ultrasound localization microscopy enables microscopic imaging of deep vasculature in the adult human brain, providing a new tool for quantifying hemodynamic parameters and characterizing blood-flow dynamics. This technique may help enhance our understanding of brain hemodynamics and the relationship between vascular abnormalities in the brain and neurological pathologies.

Revisiting the neurovascular unit

Samantha Schaeffer et al.

Summary: Schaeffer and Iadecola reviewed the heterogeneity of the neurovasculature and discussed the limitations of the neurovascular unit concept and the molecular diversity of cerebrovascular cells. They proposed the concept of a 'neurovascular complex' composed of segmentally diverse functional modules that implement coordinated vascular responses to central and peripheral signals.

Precapillary sphincters and pericytes at first-order capillaries as key regulators for brain capillary perfusion

Stefan Andreas Zambach et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that precapillary sphincters and first-order capillaries are more responsive to factors such as synaptic activity, vasoactive molecules, etc., compared to surrounding arterioles and downstream capillaries, with similar kinetics. The role of precapillary sphincters and pericytes on first-order capillaries in regulating capillary blood flow and pressure is crucial in responding to brain-derived vascular signals.
