Autonomous fuelled directional rotation about a covalent single bond

Stefan Borsley et al.

Summary: In this study, a catalysis-driven molecular motor capable of continuous 360 degrees directional rotation powered by chemical fuel was demonstrated. The directionality of the motor is influenced by the chirality of the catalyst and fuel, and can be easily reversed.

Insights from an information thermodynamics analysis of a synthetic molecular motor

Shuntaro Amano et al.

Summary: The framework of information thermodynamics allows us to quantitatively relate information to other thermodynamic parameters and reveals the generation of energy and information flow in the chemical to mechanical process. This is of great significance for understanding the thermodynamic level of molecular motors and has practical implications for machine design.

The Transient Covalent Bond in Abiotic Nonequilibrium Systems

Lasith S. Kariyawasam et al.

Summary: Biochemical systems use the energy of chemical fuels to operate out-of-equilibrium and perform critical functions. The formation of transient covalent bonds is a key tool in designing analogous reaction networks. Recent demonstrations of abiotic nonequilibrium systems using fuel chemistries have shown how different fuel reactions can impact a wide range of nonequilibrium behaviors, from self-assembly to the operation of molecular machines.

Chemically Fueled Self-Assembly in Biology and Chemistry

Krishnendu Das et al.

Summary: Life is a non-equilibrium state of matter sustained by energy expenditure, mostly utilizing chemical energy stored in molecules. Understanding the transfer of chemical energy to biochemical processes is crucial for developing artificial systems with life-like processes. Strategies for controlling the structural organization of organic molecules have been identified based on distinguishable physical-organic foundations, with examples from biology and chemistry illustrating their practical implementation and unique opportunities.

A catalysis-driven artificial molecular pump

Shuntaro Amano et al.

Summary: This study introduces an autonomous chemically fueled information ratchet that continuously pumps crown ether macrocycles from bulk solution onto a molecular axle without the need for further intervention. By tuning the dynamics of the processes, the molecular machine is able to move macrocycles from their lowest energy state in the solution to a higher energy state on the axle, maintaining out-of-equilibrium [n]rotaxanes as long as unreacted fuel is present.
