The multi-omics basis of potato heterosis

Dawei Li et al.

Summary: The study integrated transcriptome, metabolome, and DNA methylation data to explore the genetic and molecular basis of heterosis in diploid potato, revealing that the initial establishment of heterosis in diploid potato was mainly due to dominant complementation. Hybrids showed obvious gene dominant complementation in flower color, male fertility, and starch and sucrose metabolism, devoting more energy to primary metabolism for rapid growth.

African lungfish genome sheds light on the vertebrate water-to-land transition

Kun Wang et al.

Summary: A chromosome-level assembly of the African lungfish genome was reported, revealing that the large size of the lungfish genome is mainly due to retrotransposons. The study showed that lungfishes have evolved high transcription efficacy to keep gene expression balanced, and identified potential genes and regulatory elements related to terrestrial adaptation traits.

Developmental regulation of stolon and rhizome

Lei Guo et al.

Summary: Stolons and rhizomes are modified stems that facilitate vegetative reproduction by maintaining hybrid genotypes. In stolon development, gibberellins and MADS box genes promote formation while the DELLA repressor inhibits it. Photoperiod plays a role in regulating stolon formation by controlling GA biosynthesis or balancing asexual and sexual reproduction modes.

Plant NLR diversity: the known unknowns of pan-NLRomes

A. Cristina Barragan et al.

Summary: Plants and pathogens constantly adapt to each other, leading to a high level of diversity among NLRs in the plant immune system. With comprehensive pan-genome and pan-NLRome studies, our understanding of NLR sequence diversity is rapidly growing, providing a powerful platform for assigning NLR function.

The Perfect Storm: Gene Tree Estimation Error, Incomplete Lineage Sorting, and Ancient Gene Flow Explain the Most Recalcitrant Ancient Angiosperm Clade, Malpighiales

Liming Cai et al.

Summary: The genomic revolution has brought renewed hope of resolving rapid radiations in the Tree of Life. However, the study on the species tree of the flowering plant order Malpighiales using advanced methods has found that gene tree heterogeneity is high in this clade due to incomplete lineage sorting, gene tree estimation error, and gene flow. The combination of these factors likely contributes to the lack of resolution in phylogenetic relationships, suggesting that a more complex representation like phylogenetic networks may be necessary.
