Quantifying social segregation in large-scale networks

Bjorn-Atle Reme et al.

Summary: In this study, we propose a measure of social segregation using mobile phone and income register data in Oslo, Norway. We find that social segregation is prevalent and robust, with social networks being particularly concentrated among the richest individuals. We also examine the impact of exposure to other social strata on measured segregation using location data on individuals' work areas. Furthermore, we extend our analysis to a large South Asian city and demonstrate the generalizability of our main findings across diverse societies.

Social capital II: determinants of economic connectedness

Raj Chetty et al.

Summary: Low levels of social interaction across class lines have raised widespread concern and are associated with worse outcomes, such as lower rates of upward income mobility. In this study, the determinants of cross-class interaction were analyzed using data from Facebook. The results show that differences in exposure to high socioeconomic status individuals in groups such as schools and religious organizations explain about half of the social disconnection across socioeconomic lines. The other half is explained by friending bias, which is shaped by the structure of the groups in which people interact.

International trade and social connectedness

Michael Bailey et al.

Summary: The study shows that countries with closer social connections tend to trade more, especially for goods where information frictions may be large. Social connections between regions where products are produced in the exporting country and regions where they are used in the importing country predict trade in specific products. After controlling for social connectedness, the estimated effects of geographic distance and country borders on trade decline substantially.
