Time-crystalline eigenstate order on a quantum processor

Xiao Mi et al.

Summary: The article discusses the possibility of novel dynamical phases in quantum many-body systems under non-equilibrium conditions, such as the discrete time crystal. The research demonstrates the observation of a many-body localized discrete time crystal using tunable controlled-phase gates on a superconducting qubit array and shows its characteristic spatiotemporal response. The results establish a scalable approach for studying non-equilibrium phases of matter on quantum processors.

Topological edge modes without symmetry in quasiperiodically driven spin chains

Aaron J. Friedman et al.

Summary: We construct an example of a 1d quasiperiodically driven spin chain that has edge states protected by a combination of localization, dynamics, and topology. The protection of the edge states is purely based on emergent dynamical symmetries, rather than microscopic symmetry protection. We investigate the dynamical signatures of this emergent dynamical symmetry-protected topological (EDSPT) order through computational methods and find evidence of its stability against bulk many-body localization.

Floquet prethermal phase protected by U(1) symmetry on a superconducting quantum processor

Chong Ying et al.

Summary: Research has shown that conducting a digital-analog quantum simulation on a superconducting quantum processor can experimentally demonstrate a U(1) symmetry-protected prethermal phase, which exhibits dynamical stability against external perturbations and stable correlation functions due to interactions between spins.

Many-body-localized discrete time crystal with a programmable spin-based quantum simulator

J. Randall et al.

Summary: The study observes characteristic features of the many-body-localized discrete time crystal (DTC) using a quantum simulation platform, demonstrating long-lived period-doubled oscillations and showing time-crystalline order across the many-body spectrum. The results are consistent with the realization of an out-of-equilibrium Floquet phase of matter and introduce a programmable quantum simulator based on solid-state spins for exploring many-body physics.

Markovian Quantum Neuroevolution for Machine Learning

Zhide Lu et al.

Summary: Neuroevolution is a field that constructs artificial neural networks using evolutionary algorithms inspired by the evolution of brains in nature. A quantum neuroevolution algorithm has been introduced in this paper to autonomously find near-optimal quantum neural networks for different machine-learning tasks. The algorithm establishes a one-to-one mapping between quantum circuits and directed graphs, simplifying the task of finding appropriate gate sequences to searching suitable paths in the corresponding graph as a Markovian process.

Observation of a prethermal discrete time crystal

A. Kyprianidis et al.

Summary: Extending statistical physics to nonequilibrium settings has led to the discovery of new phases of matter catalyzed by periodic driving. This study showcases the utilization of a trapped-ion quantum simulator to observe a prethermal discrete time crystal without disorder, circumventing the heating problem using high-frequency driving. Floquet prethermalization is proposed as a general strategy for creating, stabilizing, and studying intrinsically out-of-equilibrium phases of matter.
