Deep ocean metagenomes provide insight into the metabolic architecture of bathypelagic microbial communities

Silvia G. Acinas et al.

Summary: The deep sea, being the largest ocean compartment, plays a crucial role in planetary-scale biogeochemical cycling. This study highlights the functional differences in microbial communities in the deep ocean, with free-living and particle-attached lifestyles driving distinct metabolic pathways. The findings also reveal unique bacterial species and metabolic capabilities that expand our understanding of the largest Earth aquatic ecosystem.

BiG-SLiCE: A highly scalable tool maps the diversity of 1.2 million biosynthetic gene clusters

Satria A. Kautsar et al.

Summary: BiG-SLiCE is a tool designed to cluster massive numbers of BGCs by representing them in Euclidean space to group BGCs into GCFs in a non-pairwise, near-linear fashion. It was used to analyze over 1.2 million BGCs collected from microbial genomes and metagenome-assembled genomes within 10 days. The tool offers a query mode to efficiently place newly sequenced BGCs into previously computed GCFs, along with a powerful output visualization engine for user-friendly data exploration.

A roadmap for metagenomic enzyme discovery

Serina L. Robinson et al.

Summary: Metagenomics has generated vast amounts of sequencing data revealing the biosynthetic potential of uncultivated microbes. Despite the availability of genome-resolved information on microbial communities from various environments, accurately predicting biocatalytic functions from sequencing data remains challenging, particularly for enzymes involved in secondary metabolism which are crucial for discovering new enzymology.
