Identifying the spatiotemporal dynamics of forest ecotourism values with remotely sensed images and social media data: A perspective of public preferences

Shixue You et al.

Summary: Ecotourism, as a cultural ecosystem service, is crucial for rural economic growth. However, there is a lack of scientific frameworks for assessing forest ecotourism values at the regional scale. This study proposes a framework to evaluate forest ecotourism values and explores the influence of public preferences. The results reveal significant spatiotemporal changes in forest ecotourism values, mainly influenced by accessibility variables.

Predicting the impacts of land use/land cover change on land surface temperature using remote sensing approach in Al Kut, Iraq

Mohanad Hassan Edan et al.

Summary: Land use/land cover changes have a significant impact on land surface temperature variations in Al Kut, Iraq. Urban area is expanding with a reduction in green cover, leading to an increase in maximum LST for both summer and winter seasons. Future predictions suggest further urban growth and loss of vegetation cover, resulting in continued increase in maximum LST for the summer and winter seasons in 2030.

Modeling and Prediction of Land Use Land Cover Change Dynamics Based on Land Change Modeler (LCM) in Nashe Watershed, Upper Blue Nile Basin, Ethiopia

Megersa Kebede Leta et al.

Summary: This study utilized Landsat images and LCM to analyze the temporal and spatial dynamics of land use land cover in the Nashe watershed of Ethiopia, predicting a further decline in forest cover and expansion of agricultural land in the future. The main trend of future LULC change will be the conversion of forest areas, range land, and grass land into agricultural land.

Effect of land use/land cover changes on surface water availability in the Omo-Gibe basin, Ethiopia

Shiferaw E. Chaemiso et al.

Summary: This study used hydrological modeling and remote sensing techniques to assess the impact of land use/land cover changes on water resources in the Omo-Gibe basin in Ethiopia. The results showed that reforestation was the best practice to reduce sediment yields in critical sub-basins. The study outputs provide valuable insights for stakeholders and policymakers in managing water resources effectively.

Using Multi-Temporal Satellite Data to Analyse Phenological Responses of Rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) to Climatic Variations in South Sumatra, Indonesia

Fathin Ayuni Azizan et al.

Summary: Land surface phenology derived from satellite data provides insights into vegetation responses to climate change. This study in South Sumatra, Indonesia, analysed the influence of climate on rubber growth and found temperature to be a significant factor modulating rubber phenology, while fluctuations in rainfall and temperature can cause changes in the growing season.

A Review on Land Use and Land Cover Change in Ethiopian Basins

Motuma Shiferaw Regasa et al.

Summary: Land Use Land Cover (LULC) changes in Ethiopia are mainly driven by population pressure, resettlement programs, climate change, and other anthropogenic factors. Studies have shown that in the past decades, the landscape has transitioned from natural to agricultural land use, commercial farmland, and built-up areas due to increasing anthropogenic pressure. The challenge lies in forecasting future LULC changes at the watershed scale to develop basin-wide management strategies for the future.

Land Cover Change in the Blue Nile River Headwaters: Farmers' Perceptions, Pressures, and Satellite-Based Mapping

Alelgn Ewunetu et al.

Summary: The headwaters of the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia are highly susceptible to land degradation, impacting water quality and flow dynamics. Through satellite remote sensing and surveys, it was found that over the past 31 years, there has been changes in land use/cover with agriculture and plantation forest land increasing, while other land types decreasing. These changes are consistent with pressures reported by local residents and root causes including population growth, land tenure, poverty, weak enforcement, lack of awareness, and poor infrastructure.
