Boosting CO2 Electrochemical Reduction with Atomically Precise Surface Modification on Gold Nanoclusters

Site Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the surface modification of gold nanoclusters by Cd doping was found to significantly enhance the selectivity and activity for CO2 reduction reaction. The Cd-doped Au19Cd2 NC exhibited the highest CO2RR activity reported. Density-functional theory calculations revealed that Cd doping can boost the CO2RR performance by providing energetically feasible pathways and reducing the energy barrier for CO formation.

Fully Exposed Cluster Catalyst (FECC): Toward Rich Surface Sites and Full Atom Utilization Efficiency

Mi Peng et al.

Summary: Single-atom catalysts have attracted increasing attention in heterogeneous catalysis due to their unique electronic properties, but may have limited advantages for reactions that require multiple atomic metallic states or metal-metal bond surface sites. Fully exposed cluster catalysts, as a cross-dimensional extension to the concept of single-atom catalysts, provide diverse surface sites and offer the advantage of maximized atom utilization efficiency. This outlook summarizes recent advances in the design and characterization of cluster catalysts, along with potential challenges.

Odongo Francis Ngome Okello et al.

Summary: Functional h-BN has been prepared by incorporating transition metal impurities like nanoparticles and single atoms. STEM combined with DFT was used to study Ta, Co, Ni, and Ir-decorated h-BN monolayers, showing that Ta atoms are well dispersed while Co, Ni, and Ir atoms form 3D nanoclusters. This study highlights the dynamics of TM/h-BN interaction and provides insight for designing nanostructures for electrocatalytic applications.

Double-helical assembly of heterodimeric nanoclusters into supercrystals

Yingwei Li et al.

Summary: DNA has long been used as a template for constructing helical assemblies of inorganic nanoparticles, but achieving helices without biological ligands is challenging. Atomically precise nanoclusters protected by ligands demonstrate hierarchical structural complexity, similar to biomolecules. The newly synthesized homodimeric and heterodimeric gold nanoclusters self-assemble into superstructures, with heterodimeric clusters forming more complex helical superstructures driven by van der Waals interactions. The surrounding ligands on the clusters contribute to the assembly through paired steric interactions.

The role of ligands in atomically precise nanocluster-catalyzed CO2 electrochemical reduction

Site Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different protecting ligands on Au nanoclusters in the CO2 electrochemical reduction reaction, revealing that the sulfur site acts as the active site supporting CO selectivity, while the selenium site shows a higher tendency for hydrogen evolution. Energy calculations demonstrate that the sulfur-based Au nanocluster exhibits lower energy penalties for key reaction steps, leading to improved catalytic performance.
