Muscle ultrasound: Present state and future opportunities

Juerd Wijntjes et al.

Summary: Muscle ultrasound is a valuable addition to the neuromuscular toolkit, with proven value and reliability, but it is not fully utilized in the diagnostic care of patients with neuromuscular disease. Limitations in visual image interpretation could be overcome with simpler scoring systems and deep-learning algorithms. More information on the relation between specific neuromuscular disorders, disease stages, and expected ultrasound abnormalities will enhance the technique's specificity.

Longitudinal Assessment of Strength, Functional Capacity, Oropharyngeal Function, and Quality of Life in Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy

Summary: OPMD is a late-onset, progressive muscle disease with slow disease progression. This study found that several outcome measures detected disease progression within 20 months, with deltoid muscle strength showing the greatest decline. These longitudinal data provide clinical outcome measures that can be used as biomarkers in future clinical trials.
