Linking planetary embryo formation to planetesimal formation: I. The effect of the planetesimal surface density in the terrestrial planet zone

Oliver Voelkel et al.

Summary: The study quantifies the timescales and spatial distribution of planetary embryos through collisional growth and fragmentation of dynamically forming 100 km sized planetesimals. It shows the effect of planetesimal surface density evolution on the location and timescales of planetary embryo formation, with only the innermost embryos forming within the lifetime of an active pebble flux. A one-dimensional analytically derived model for embryo formation based on the local planetesimal surface density evolution is presented as a valuable asset for future studies of planet formation.

Linking planetary embryo formation to planetesimal formation: II. The effect of pebble accretion in the terrestrial planet zone

Oliver Voelkel et al.

Summary: Pebble accretion during planetary formation significantly affects the formation of super-Earths in the inner region, but not in the outer region. Accretion of pebbles leads to the formation of fewer but more massive embryos, with the innermost embryos forming slightly earlier than those where pebble accretion is not considered.

Molecules with ALMA at Planet-forming Scales (MAPS). I. Program Overview and Highlights

Karin Oberg et al.

Summary: The distribution of molecules in disks around young stars plays a crucial role in determining the elemental compositions of planets and their access to important compounds such as water and organics. Through ALMA observations, researchers have made significant discoveries about the links between dust, gas, and chemical substructures in these disks, reshaping our understanding of planet formation chemistry.

Molecules with ALMA at Planet-forming Scales (MAPS). III. Characteristics of Radial Chemical Substructures

Charles J. Law et al.

Summary: The study reveals the existence of a large number of different chemical substructures in protoplanetary disks, which can be found at different radii. Most of these chemical substructures coincide spatially with dust substructures in the inner regions of the disks, while some cannot be directly linked to dust substructures. This suggests that chemical substructures could represent different disk characteristics and influence the environment in which planets assemble.

Modeling the nonaxisymmetric structure in the HD 163296 disk with planet-disk interaction

P. J. Rodenkirch et al.

Summary: The study investigates the physical mechanisms behind the formation of the crescent-shaped asymmetry and ring structures in the HD 163296 disk, suggesting that they may be attributed to planet-disk interactions. Simulation results show that the crescent-shaped feature can be qualitatively modeled, and provide insights by constraining the level of viscosity and planetary mass.

ALMA Observations of the Asymmetric Dust Disk around DM Tau

Summary: In this study, the dust disk around DM Tau was analyzed using ALMA observations, revealing two asymmetries that could be related to early evolution. Additionally, millimeter emissions were found inside the ring, suggesting the possibility of forming small icy planets in the region.

The importance of thermal torques on the migration of planets growing by pebble accretion

Octavio M. Guilera et al.

Summary: The exchange of angular momentum between a growing planet and the protoplanetary disc is crucial for planet migration during formation. A new thermal torque has been proposed to generate outward migration of low-mass planets, depending on both disc properties and planet luminosity from accretion. This thermal torque plays a significant role in the formation and migration process of planets, especially in low-viscosity discs.

Protoplanetary Disk Rings as Sites for Planetesimal Formation

Daniel Carrera et al.

Summary: Research shows that even a small pressure bump in protoplanetary disks may lead to planetesimal formation via the streaming instability without fully halting radial particle drift. Additionally, pure gravitational collapse via concentration in pressure bumps is not responsible for planetesimal formation, and there is tentative evidence that planetesimal formation does not occur for millimeter-sized particles. This study highlights the robustness of planetesimal formation in pressure bumps for centimeter-sized particles.
