Galactic Mass Estimates Using Dwarf Galaxies as Kinematic Tracers

Anika Slizewski et al.

Summary: This study uses the Galactic Mass Estimator (GME) code and dwarf galaxy (DG) kinematic data from multiple sources to find new mass estimates and cumulative mass profiles for the Milky Way (MW). Bayesian credible regions are also provided for the estimates. The results show that the estimates are comparable to other recent studies, but differ significantly from previous research.

Contribution of Gaia Sausage to the Galactic Stellar Halo Revealed by K Giants and Blue Horizontal Branch Stars from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope, Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and Gaia

Wenbo Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the contribution of the Gaia Sausage to the stellar halo of the Milky Way using a Gaussian mixture model. The results show that the Gaia Sausage accounts for about 41%-74% of the inner stellar halo. The influence of the Gaia Sausage decreases with increasing Galactocentric radius. Furthermore, even after removing halo substructures, the contribution of the Gaia Sausage remains relatively high.

Milky Way total mass derived by rotation curve and globular cluster kinematics from Gaia EDR3

Jianling Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, we estimated the total mass and density profile of the Milky Way using an action-based distribution function for the dynamical model. Constraints were obtained from the proper motions of globular clusters from Gaia EDR3, the rotation curve based on Gaia DR2 data, and the vertical force data. We used the Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo method to explore the parameters, fully constraining the globular cluster distribution function and Galactic potential. Numerical simulations were also employed to investigate the uncertainties in the potential constraint when considering a possible massive Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The results suggest that the presence of a massive LMC would affect the measurement of the Milky Way's mass at large radii. Additionally, mock data sets were created using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations to test the effect of unrelaxed substructures on the final results. It was found that the measured rotation curve fluctuated around the input value within 5%. By allowing for a large freedom in choosing the prior mass profile for both baryonic and dark matter, the total mass of the Milky Way was determined to range from 5.36(-0.68)(+0.81) x 10^11 M_sun to 7.84(-1.97)(+3.08) x 10^11 M_sun, including the contribution of a putative massive LMC. This significantly narrows the previously published range of the Milky Way's total mass and corresponds to a dark matter density at the solar position of 0.34(-0.02)(+0.02) GeV cm^(-3).

Measuring the Milky Way mass distribution in the presence of the LMC

Lilia Correa Magnus et al.

Summary: This study presents a method to compensate for the perturbations caused by the interaction between the Milky Way and its largest satellite, the Large Magellanic Cloud. By computing the past trajectory of the satellite and integrating the orbits of tracer objects back in time, the authors are able to estimate the mass of the Milky Way more accurately.

Substructure at High Speed. II. The Local Escape Velocity and Milky Way Mass with Gaia eDR3

Lina Necib et al.

Summary: Measuring the escape velocity of the Milky Way is crucial for understanding its mass, dark matter velocity distribution, and dark matter density profile. In this study, a strategy is introduced to robustly measure the escape velocity by considering the presence of kinematic substructures. The results show that the escape velocity at the solar position is v(esc) = 445(-8)(+25) km/s, and the Milky Way has a considerably lighter mass than previous measurements when assuming a Navarro-Frenck-White dark matter profile.

The Global Structure of the Milky Way's Stellar Halo Based on the Orbits of Local Metal-poor Stars

Genta Sato et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the global structure of the Milky Way's stellar halo, with a focus on the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus component. The results show that the halo becomes rounder at all radii as the metallicity decreases, while a more boxy/peanut-like shape is observed in the relatively metal-rich range. The distribution of azimuthal velocities reveals a disk-like flattened structure in a specific metallicity range. The stellar subsample with GSE-like kinematics exhibits a more spherical density distribution and an outer ridge at around 20 kpc.

Sizing from the smallest scales: the mass of the Milky Way

M. K. Rodriguez Wimberly et al.

Summary: As the Milky Way and its satellite system become more important in cosmological studies, accurately estimating the mass of the Milky Way's dark matter halo is crucial. Utilizing data from stellar proper motions and simulations, a mass estimate of around 1-1.2 x 10(12) M-circle dot for the Milky Way's dark matter halo has been derived.

Influence of the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus on the Density Shape of the Galactic Stellar Halo Revealed by Halo K Giants from the LAMOST Survey

Wenbo Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus (GSE) on the density distribution of the Galactic stellar halo. Using 11,624 K giants from the LAMOST survey, the stars are classified as members or non-members of the GSE based on their velocities and metallicity. The stellar halo is divided into two parts: the GSE-related halo and the GSE-removed halo. The results show that the GSE-related halo is less vertically flattened compared to the GSE-removed halo and both halos become more spherical at larger radii.

A Tilt in the Dark Matter Halo of the Galaxy

Jiwon Jesse Han et al.

Summary: This paper studies the ancient merger debris in the stellar halo, finding that long-lived structures HAC and VOD are associated with GSE, and the dark matter halo of the Galaxy is tilted and aligned with HAC-VOD. Such halo-disk misalignment is common in modern cosmological simulations. In addition, the relationship between the local and global stellar halo is analyzed.

Tango for three: Sagittarius, LMC, and the Milky Way

Eugene Vasiliev et al.

Summary: By utilizing astrometric data, distance estimates, and line-of-sight velocities, we assembled a catalogue of candidate members of the Sagittarius stream, revealing a misalignment in the stream track attributed to a time-dependent perturbation in the gravitational potential, likely caused by the Large Magellanic Cloud. Our simulations showed that the presence of the LMC is necessary to accurately model the Sagittarius stream, highlighting the dynamic nature of the Milky Way's interaction with massive satellites like the LMC.

Action-based distribution function modelling for constraining the shape of the Galactic dark matter halo

Kohei Hattori et al.

Summary: Using astrometric data from Gaia DR2 for halo RR Lyrae stars, the 3D density profile of the Galactic dark matter (DM) halo within 30kpc from the Galactic centre was estimated. It was found that 99% of the posterior distribution of density flattening parameter q is located at q > 0.963, disfavoring a flattened DM halo and potentially contradicting cosmological simulations. Further studies are needed to explore the discrepancy between observations and simulations.
