Rotation acceleration of asteroids (10115) 1992 SK, (1685) Toro, and (1620) Geographos due to the YORP effect

J. Durech et al.

Summary: By conducting new photometric observations, we detected the YORP effect in three near-Earth asteroids, with one asteroid showing a rotation acceleration that matches the theoretical value. We also discovered a new feature, the effect of solar precession.

Fine-regolith production on asteroids controlled by rock porosity

S. Cambioni et al.

Summary: The abundance of subcentimetre particles on Bennu is inversely correlated with the porosity of rocks, indicating that accumulation of unconsolidated particles is hindered where rocks are highly porous. Regolith blankets are uncommon on carbonaceous asteroids due to their high porosity compared to stony asteroids. This may be related to the compaction and cementation that results in breccias dominating carbonaceous chondrite meteorites.

SPH simulations for shape deformation of rubble-pile asteroids through spinup: The challenge for making top-shaped asteroids Ryugu and Bennu

Keisuke Sugiura et al.

Summary: By simulating granular bodies spinning up at different rates, it was found that the deformation of rubble piles before breakup can be classified into three modes based on the friction angle. Bodies with lower friction angle evolve into oblate spheroids through internal deformation, while those with higher friction angle deform into axisymmetric top shapes through surface landslides. Rapid spinup mechanisms are suggested to be preferable for the formation of axisymmetric top shapes.

Detection of the YORP effect on the contact binary (68346) 2001 KZ66 from combined radar and optical observations

Tarik J. Zegmott et al.

Summary: The YORP effect is crucial for the physical and dynamical evolution of small asteroids. Through observations of (68346) 2001 KZ66, researchers found it to be a retrograde rotator with a bifurcated shape.

Asteroid 16 Psyche: Shape, Features, and Global Map

Michael K. Shepard et al.

Summary: A shape model of asteroid 16 Psyche was developed using observations from various wavelengths. The model provides dimensions, spin axis, and surface composition information suggesting Psyche may be a differentiated world with metal-rich regions. These findings support a possible ferrovolcanism formation mechanism for localized regions.
