The transient ultraluminous X-ray source, ULX-4, in M51

S. Allak et al.

Summary: In this study, we analyzed the ULX-4 transient source in the M51 galaxy using temporal and spectral analysis techniques. The X-ray flux of the source showed significant variation within a month, but no short-term variability was observed within the time intervals of 100-2000 s. We found evidence of a bi-modality feature in the flux distribution of ULX-4. Based on optical counterparts identified using Hubble Space Telescope data, the spectral type of ULX-4 was determined to be B-type stars. One of the counterparts exhibited a weak periodicity, which could be associated with orbital motion of a red supergiant donor or interactions with a circumstellar disc in the case of a Be/X star.

X-Ray Binaries in M51 I: Catalog and Statistics

Jared R. Rice et al.

Summary: This study utilized archival data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Hubble Space Telescope to identify 334 candidate X-ray binary systems and potential optical counterparts in the interacting galaxy pair NGC 5194/5195 (M51). The X-ray luminosity function of the sources above a few times 10(36) erg s(-1) follows a power law distribution, with approximately 80% of sources showing variability and nearly half of them having an optical counterpart within 0.5.

Calibrating X-Ray Binary Luminosity Functions via Optical Reconnaissance. I. The Case of M83

Qiana Hunt et al.

Summary: Building on previous research, this study constructs X-ray luminosity functions for different classes of X-ray binary donors in the nearby star-forming galaxy M83. The analysis reveals an exponential downturn in the high-mass XRB XLF, while the low and intermediate-mass XRB XLFs are consistent with the total XLF. This suggests a significant contribution from low and possibly intermediate-mass XRBs to the total XRB XLF of M83.

Ultraluminous X-Ray Sources

Summary: ULXs are a class of unique objects with X-ray luminosities exceeding the Eddington limit, mostly believed to be supercritical accretion disks. The discovery of neutron stars in some systems further supports this conclusion.
