The HARPS search for southern extra-solar planets XLVI. 12 super-Earths around the solar type stars HD 39194, HD 93385, HD 96700, HD 154088, and HD 189567

N. Unger et al.

Summary: This study presents precise radial-velocity measurements of five solar-type stars obtained with the HARPS Echelle spectrograph in La Silla, Chile. It identified 12 planets within several multiplanet systems, including three newly discovered ones, in the super-Earth and sub-Neptune mass regime. The research used Bayesian model comparison to make informed choices on the number of planets in each star system, contributing to the expansion of known exoplanets.

The Breakthrough Listen Search For Intelligent Life Near the Galactic Center. I.

Vishal Gajjar et al.

Summary: In this study, deep observations were conducted towards the Galactic Center to search for potential extraterrestrial intelligence. Preliminary results revealed constraints on ETI transmitters and artificially dispersed transient signals, as well as the presence of Fast Radio Burst-like magnetars in the region. However, no new transient bursts were detected, suggesting limits on the presence of radio-loud magnetars at the Galactic Center.

The SOPHIE search for northern extrasolar planets XVII. A wealth of new objects: Six cool Jupiters, three brown dwarfs, and 16 low-mass binary stars

S. Dalal et al.

Summary: This study identifies and characterizes 6 cool Jupiters, 3 brown dwarf candidates, and 16 low-mass stellar companions using radial velocity surveys. The discovery of a new, highly eccentric cool Jupiter, BD+631405 b, adds to the diversity of substellar objects. The findings help constrain models of formation and evolution for substellar objects and low-mass stars.

Kepler K2 Campaign 9-I. Candidate short-duration events from the first space-based survey for planetary microlensing

I McDonald et al.

Summary: The study presents the first short-duration candidate microlensing events from the Kepler K2 mission. Using high temporal cadence observations, the researchers recovered 22 short-duration events and announced five new candidate events. One event is a caustic-crossing binary event, while the other four have very short durations typical of an Earth-mass free-floating planet population.

Past, present and future stars that can see Earth as a transiting exoplanet

L. Kaltenegger et al.

Summary: The search for extraterrestrial life has shifted towards transiting exoplanets, with upcoming large telescopes set to further explore the potential for life in the atmospheres of these planets. Recent studies have identified numerous stars in close proximity to our Solar System that may have had the opportunity to observe Earth during its transit, hinting at the possibility of life being detected from afar. Additionally, human-made radio waves have already reached a significant number of the closest stars, expanding the reach of our presence in the cosmos.

Mutual Detectability: A Targeted SETI Strategy That Avoids the SETI Paradox

Eamonn Kerins

Summary: The article introduces the concept of mutual detectability as a strategy to increase the success potential of targeted SETI. Within the mutual detectability framework, the party judged to have better quality evidence has the onus to transmit information to avoid the SETI Paradox. Surveys of Earth's Transit Zone for Earth-analog transiting planets around subsolar luminosity hosts can facilitate targeted SETI programs for civilizations with game-theory incentive to transmit signals.
