Antiplasmodial activity of constituents and their metabolites after in vitro gastrointestinal biotransformation of a Nauclea pobeguinii extract

Laura Peeters et al.

Summary: The traditional medicinal plant Nauclea pobeguinii is used for treating malaria. Research on the plant extract and strictosamide, a potential active compound, suggests that alkaloids in the extract undergo biotransformation to become active compounds after oral administration. The study found a diverse range of compounds in the extract, mainly saponins and alkaloids, contributing to its antiplasmodial activity.

Alkaloid diversification in the genus Palicourea (Rubiaceae: Palicoureeae) viewed from a (retro-)biogenetic perspective

Andreas Berger et al.

Summary: The diverse alkaloids found in the genus Palicourea have been examined and organized based on their structures and biosynthetic groups. Potential biosynthetic pathways have been proposed using a parsimony-based approach, highlighting important steps and relationships between these alkaloids. Understanding the diversification of alkaloids is crucial for studying the ecological significance and evolution of biosynthetic capabilities of Palicourea, and can drive future investigations on the biochemical and genetic background.

A revised classification of the sister tribes Palicoureeae and Psychotrieae (Rubiaceae) indicates genus-specific alkaloid accumulation

Andreas Berger et al.

Summary: Tribes Palicoureeae and Psychotrieae, belonging to the Rubiaceae family in the Gentianales order, are closely related and widely distributed around the world. A review of phytochemical literature was conducted, based on phylogenetic analysis and taxonomic updates, assigning previously reported phytochemical data for Psychotria to other genera such as Carapichea, Eumachia, and Palicourea. This study challenges the conventional understanding of Psychotria as a genus rich in monoterpene-indole alkaloids and highlights the specific alkaloid profile of each of its relatives. This research is of great importance for understanding animal-plant interactions and drug discovery.
