Physiological and Pathophysiological Roles of Metabolic Pathways for NET Formation and Other Neutrophil Functions

Darko Stojkov et al.

Summary: Neutrophils, the most abundant cells in the leukocyte population, can modulate glycolysis and other metabolic pathways to limit their effector functions. These metabolic pathways are crucial for energy usage and specialized actions, such as ROS production, chemotaxis, phagocytosis, degranulation, and the formation of NETs. Understanding the requirements of metabolic pathways for neutrophil functions may lead to the discovery of molecular targets for novel anti-infectious and/or anti-inflammatory drugs.

Neutrophil extracellular traps in chronic lung disease: implications for pathogenesis and therapy

Holly R. Keir et al.

Summary: Neutrophilic inflammation plays a key role in multiple chronic lung diseases, and the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) has emerged as an important mechanism in these diseases. NETs can bind pathogens and prevent microbial dissemination, but they can also cause tissue damage and increased inflammation. Treating neutrophilic inflammation is challenging, but novel approaches to suppress NET formation or associated inflammation are being developed.

Potentiation of the Activity of Antibiotics against ATCC and MDR Bacterial Strains with (+)-a-Pinene and (-)-Borneol

Nadghia F. Leite-Sampaio et al.

Summary: The increasing rates of antimicrobial resistance have led to the development of new drugs, and phytocompounds such as (+)-alpha-pinene and (-)-borneol have shown potential in combatting infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. The research evaluated the antibacterial and antibiotic-modulating activity of these compounds and found that (+)-alpha-pinene showed significant antibacterial activity against E. coli, while (-)-borneol inhibited the growth of E. coli and enhanced the antibiotic activity of certain antibiotics against S. aureus.

First observation of true vivipary in Grindelia squarrosa (Asteraceae)

Artur Pliszko et al.

Summary: This study documented the occurrence of true vivipary in Grindelia squarrosa, a North American member of Asteraceae, in a new locality in Poland. While 90% of the examined capitula exhibited true vivipary, the number of germinated seeds was low and highly variable, indicating a potential relationship with prolonged rainfall. Further research is needed to explore the significance of true vivipary in the naturalization and invasion of G. squarrosa, as well as the involvement of viviparous seedlings in autochory.

Innate Immunomodulatory Activity of Cedrol, a Component of Essential Oils Isolated from Juniperus Species

Gulmira oezek et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the chemical composition and innate immunomodulatory activity of essential oils isolated from eight Juniperus species found in Montana and Kazakhstan. The study identified cedrol as a novel neutrophil agonist that can desensitize cells to subsequent stimulation by N-formyl peptide, suggesting potential kinase targets for cedrol. Several essential oil samples contained high levels of cedrol, inducing intracellular Ca2+ mobilization in human neutrophils which inhibited chemotaxis to N-formyl peptide.
