The Effect of the Use of Essential Oils in the Feed of Bee Families on Honey Chemical Composition and Antimicrobial Activity

Roxana Nicoleta Lazar et al.

Summary: The study focused on the use of essential oils in supplementary feeding of bee families to monitor the effect on honey chemical components. All essential oils used in the study had a positive impact on honey composition, with oregano, mint, thyme, and cinnamon oils showing significant results. The introduction of certain essential oils reduced honey acidity and increased total phenolic and flavonoid content, as well as antioxidant activity.

Identification of components in Kazakhstan honeys that correlate with antimicrobial activity against wound and skin infecting microorganisms

Pauline McLoone et al.

Summary: The study investigated the antimicrobial activity and chemical composition of 12 honeys from Kazakhstan and medical grade manuka honey. Buckwheat & multi-floral honey from Kazakhstan demonstrated the highest antimicrobial activity against Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 19433). Compounds identified as correlating with antimicrobial activity include hydroxyphenyl acetic acid, p-coumaric acid, (1H)-quinolinone, and abscisic acid, which could be potential bioactive agents for the treatment of wound and skin infections.
