Exciton Delocalization in a DNA-Templated Organic Semiconductor Dimer Assembly

Xiao Wang et al.

Summary: A chiral dimer of an organic semiconductor was created by assembling an octamer of polyaniline with DNA. The dimer showed easy reconfiguration between its monomeric and dimeric forms. Experimental and theoretical studies were conducted to examine the dimer's geometry and the exciton coupling between its molecules. Protonic doping allowed for easy switching between different electronic states, and the dimer exhibited a Davydov splitting similar to DNA-dye systems with strong transition dipoles. This research provides a possible platform for studying the fundamental properties of organic semiconductors with DNAtemplated assemblies, which have potential applications in artificial light-harvesting systems and excitonic devices.

Understanding Self-Assembled Pseudoisocyanine Dye Aggregates in DNA Nanostructures and Their Exciton Relay Transfer Capabilities

Matthew Chiriboga et al.

Summary: Progress has been made using DNA to template J-aggregates, which exhibit interesting photonic properties and enhance exciton transfer. Linear contiguous J-aggregates can relay excitons up to 16.3 nm, however, nonlinear arrays show poor exciton transfer efficiency.

Influence of Hydrophobicity on Excitonic Coupling in DNA-Templated Indolenine Squaraine Dye Aggregates

Olga A. Mass et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of dye hydrophobicity on the strength of excitonic coupling in squaraine aggregates templated by DNA Holliday Junction. It shows a strong correlation between squaraine hydrophobicity and the strength of excitonic coupling, with dimers of dichloroindolenine squaraine exhibiting the strongest coupling strength. The research provides insights into how dye structures affect excitonic coupling in dye aggregates templated by DNA, offering guidance for the design of exciton-based materials and devices.

Tuning Optical Absorption and Emission Using Strongly Coupled Dimers in Programmable DNA Scaffolds

Stephanie M. Hart et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate the ability to vary the optical absorption and emission properties of molecular materials by changing the geometry of a strongly coupled Cy3 dimer on a DNA tile. By leveraging the programmability of DNA, we observe dramatic changes in photophysics at both the ensemble and single-molecule level, including separable lifetimes and environmental sensitivity. The Cy3-DX tile constructs have potential applications in fluorescence imaging and could provide a framework for controllable photophysics in light-harvesting devices and molecular electronics.

Synthesis of Substituted Cy5 Phosphoramidite Derivatives and Their Incorporation into Oligonucleotides Using Automated DNA Synthesis

Adam Meares et al.

Summary: This study prepared a series of Cy5 derivatives with different 5,5'substituents for incorporation into DNA structures, and successfully incorporated them into nascent oligonucleotides. The photophysical properties of these DNA-labeled Cy5 derivatives exhibited similarities to the parent dyes, with either no change or an increase in fluorescence quantum yield depending on the sequence.

Engineering couplings for exciton transport using synthetic DNA scaffolds

Stephanie M. Hart et al.

Summary: This study introduces a DNA-based platform for constructing tunable excitonic systems, allowing independent control over the coupling among the chromophores and between the chromophores and the environment. It demonstrates that the coupling between the chromophores and the environment can enhance exciton transport efficiency, pointing towards the development of designer nanophotonic devices.

Rotaxane rings promote oblique packing and extended lifetimes in DNA-templated molecular dye aggregates

Matthew S. Barclay et al.

Summary: Molecular excitons play a crucial role in various fields such as light harvesting and organic electronics, with their structure and dynamics being influenced by molecular packing. The addition of rotaxane rings to squaraine dyes templated with DNA can result in an oblique packing arrangement with improved optical properties. This method may be beneficial for optimizing excitonic materials for applications ranging from solar energy conversion to quantum information science.

Excited-State Lifetimes of DNA-Templated Cyanine Dimer, Trimer, and Tetramer Aggregates: The Role of Exciton Delocalization, Dye Separation, and DNA Heterogeneity

Jonathan S. Huff et al.

Summary: DNA-templated molecular dye aggregates are a novel class of materials that have attracted attention due to their ease of assembly, precise dye positioning, and shortened excited-state lifetimes. Investigating the structural factors influencing excited-state lifetimes, it was found that the distance between dyes plays a crucial role in determining the lifetimes of these materials.
