Essential Oils of Duguetia Species A. St. Hill (Annonaceae): Chemical Diversity and Pharmacological Potential

Albert C. dos Santos et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the chemical constituents and pharmacological properties of essential oils (EOs) from Duguetia species. Twelve species were found, and the main chemical constituents reported included bicyclogermacrene and humulene epoxide II. The EOs of Duguetia species exhibited anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, anti-trypanosoma, cytotoxic, and antitumor properties.

Essential Oils from Annonaceae Species from Brazil: A Systematic Review of Their Phytochemistry, and Biological Activities

Marcia Moraes Cascaes et al.

Summary: This work systematically reviewed the chemical composition and biological effects of essential oils from Annonaceae species in Brazil from 2011 to 2021. The essential oils showed diverse biological activities, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiproliferative, and cytotoxic effects, with some demonstrating superior efficacy compared to available drugs on the market.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Essential Oil from Bark of Aniba parviflora (Meisn.) Mez (Lauraceae) Reduces HepG2 Cell Proliferation and Inhibits Tumor Development in a Xenograft Model

Felipe P. de Oliveira et al.

Summary: Aniba parviflora is an aromatic plant from the Amazon rainforest with commercial value in the perfumery industry, and is traditionally used in Brazilian folk medicine to treat snakebites. The essential oil extracted from its bark demonstrated significant growth inhibition on human hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG2) with minimal toxicity to non-cancerous cells.

Caryophyllene Oxide, the Active Compound Isolated from Leaves of Hymenaea courbaril L. (Fabaceae) with Antiproliferative and Apoptotic Effects on PC-3 Androgen-Independent Prostate Cancer Cell Line

Claudia Delgado et al.

Summary: Research on extracts from Hymenaea courbaril L. revealed that the main compound caryophyllene oxide can induce apoptosis in prostate cancer cells with low toxicity, and has minimal impact on normal cells. This compound causes depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane and results in various morphological changes and shifts in apoptotic proteins and caspases.

Necroptosis, pyroptosis and apoptosis: an intricate game of cell death

Damien Bertheloot et al.

Summary: Cell death is a fundamental physiological process in all living organisms, playing important roles in embryonic development, organ maintenance, aging, immune responses, and autoimmunity. Recent research has significantly increased our understanding of the mechanisms orchestrating different types of programmed cell death and how they affect the balance of cell fates. Various modalities of cell death, such as apoptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis, have been studied to highlight both common and unique pathways and their impact on the surrounding cells and the organism as a whole.
