Molecular assessment of dietary niche partitioning in an endemic island radiation of tropical mammals

Anna L. Petrosky et al.

Summary: This study used DNA metabarcoding to investigate dietary niche partitioning in an endemic radiation of mammals in the Philippines, revealing both niche partitioning and phylogenetically-uncorrelated adaptive evolution in this small mammal community. The data provide evidence for fine-scale resource partitioning within the community and shed light on the role of dietary adaptation in the co-occurrence of closely related species. The study reinforces the value of DNA metabarcoding as a tool for investigating ecological relationships and evolutionary ecology at both the community and phylogenetic level.

Food for everyone: Differential feeding habits of cryptic bat species inferred from DNA metabarcoding

Tommy Andriollo et al.

Summary: Using DNA metabarcoding, this study investigated the differential diet of three closely-related bat species in sympatry, revealing strong seasonal and spatial variations in diet composition at both intra- and interspecific levels. It was found that each bat species utilized different feeding grounds and hunting techniques, primarily driven by habitat, highlighting the importance of temporally comprehensive samples in understanding species coexistence. Valuable information on species coexistence and resource partitioning can be derived from the taxonomic identity of prey obtained by metabarcoding.
