Biogeography and conservation of desert warthog Phacochoerus aethiopicus and common warthog Phacochoerus africanus (Artiodactyla: Suidae) in the Horn of Africa

Yvonne A. de Jong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biogeography of two species of warthog in the Horn of Africa. The desert warthog was found to mainly occur in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia, while the common warthog is distributed throughout the region. Although both species are allopatric in most areas, they are sympatric in certain regions of Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya. The populations of both species are declining due to the negative impacts of human population growth on the environment.

The Mutationathon highlights the importance of reaching standardization in estimates of pedigree-based germline mutation rates

Lucie A. Bergeron et al.

Summary: This study describes the steps involved in estimating pedigree-based mutation rates and provides a review of methods and parameter choices used in recent literature. Additionally, through a mutation rate competition, the study reveals factors that can contribute to estimation discrepancies. The research highlights the importance of standardized methods in mutation rate estimations and the difficulty in comparing rates from different studies.

Revisiting the Evolutionary History of Pigs via De Novo Mutation Rate Estimation in A Three-generation Pedigree

Mingpeng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study estimated the de novo mutation rate of pigs and reinvestigated their evolutionary history. The results showed that the divergence events in pig evolution were not as ancient as previously thought, and the most recent divergence between Chinese wild and domesticated pigs occurred in northern China.

Estimating divergence times from DNA sequences

Per Sjodin et al.

Summary: Genetic variation can be used to infer evolutionary forces, with population genetic approaches like Two-Two and Two-Two-outgroup providing estimates of model parameters such as population divergence time. Solving equations derived from simple population-divergence models allows for direct estimation of split times, offering insights into complex relationships among populations and ancestors.

Cytokine Storm in Domestic Pigs Induced by Infection of Virulent African Swine Fever Virus

Shuchao Wang et al.

Summary: African swine fever, caused by ASFV, is a highly contagious hemorrhagic disease in domestic pigs. The lack of effective vaccine development is largely due to gaps in knowledge regarding pathogenesis and immunology, specifically the role of cytokines in the host's immune response. Increased understanding of cytokine dynamics during ASFV infection could provide insights into developing potential therapeutic interventions.

High genetic diversity and low differentiation reflect the ecological versatility of the African leopard

Patricia Pecnerova et al.

Summary: Research reveals that the genomic diversity of African leopards is higher than that of other large cats, likely due to their exceptionally high effective population size maintained throughout the Pleistocene. Compared to other large cats, African leopards exhibit ongoing gene flow and very low population differentiation within their population.
