Butterfly eyespots evolved via cooption of an ancestral gene-regulatory network that also patterns antennae, legs, and wings

Suriya Narayanan Murugesan et al.

Summary: Research suggests that butterfly eyespots likely originated by repurposing ancestral appendage generegulatory network (GRN) elements to novel locations on the wing. Comparative transcriptome analysis and CRISPR knockout experiments indicate that eyespots share regulatory connections with antennae and the loss of specific regulatory elements leads to the loss of eyespots, antennae, legs, and wings.

Fly Cell Atlas: A single-nucleus transcriptomic atlas of the adult fruit fly

Hongjie Li et al.

Summary: This study presents a single-cell atlas of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, including 580,000 nuclei and annotations of over 250 distinct cell types. It serves as a valuable resource for the Drosophila community and provides a reference for studying genetic perturbations and disease models at single-cell resolution.

Hox genes are essential for the development of eyespots in Bicyclus anynana butterflies

Yuji Matsuoka et al.

Summary: The eyespot patterns on nymphalid butterflies' wings are novel traits that originated first in hindwings and subsequently in forewings. Antp and Ubx play essential roles in eyespot development, with Antp promoting the development of forewing eyespots and hindwing white centers, and Ubx repressing the size of some eyespots. Additionally, Antp is crucial for the development of silver scales in male wings.
