Sophorolipids bioproduction in the yeast Starmerella bombicola: Current trends and perspectives

Muneer Ahmed Qazi et al.

Summary: Sophorolipids are highly active green surfactants appreciated worldwide for their low toxicity, biodegradability, wide range of applications, and biotechnological potential. The oleaginous budding yeast Starmerella bombicola is the main producer of sophorolipids using low-cost substrates. Genetic engineering tools in S. bombicola offer possibilities to improve production titers, structural variability, and stability of sophorolipids. Advanced technologies like 'Omics and CRISPR/Cas have also contributed to rational engineering research.

Antimicrobial activity of sophorolipids produced by Starmerella bombicola against phytopathogens from cherry tomato

Talita de O. Caretta et al.

Summary: Results showed that sophorolipids inhibited the mycelial growth in vitro at a minimum concentration of 2 mg mL(-1). Applying sophorolipids at 1, 2, and 4 mg mL(-1) on tomato leaves before inoculation of B. cinerea was the most effective treatment, reducing leaf necrosis by up to 76.90%. Washing tomato fruits with sophorolipids before inoculation of B. cinerea could inhibit gray mold development by up to 96.27%.

Valorization of waste-cooking oil into sophorolipids and application of their methyl hydroxyl branched fatty acid derivatives to produce engineering bioplastics

Jeong-Hun Kim et al.

Summary: Waste-cooking oil (WCO), defined as vegetable oil used to fry food at high temperatures, generates 41-67 million tons annually globally. Without proper treatment, it causes serious environmental issues, but through biotechnology, WCO can be recycled to produce high value-added compounds, extending its applications to the plastics industry.
