Investigation on Slip Activity and Plastic Heterogeneity of Aged Mg-10Y Sheets During Compression

R. Ni et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of precipitates on individual slip activities and plastic heterogeneity during room temperature compression of Mg-10Y sheets. It was found that after peak-aged treatment, the frequency of basal slip increased while pyramidal slips significantly decreased. Most activated slip systems had large normalized Schmid factors, but there were also hard-oriented slip systems, indicating local stress deviation.

Research on deformation mechanism of AZ31 magnesium alloy sheet with non-basal texture during uniaxial tension at room temperature: A visco-plastic self-consistent analysis

Li Hu et al.

Summary: The relationship between the activities of different deformation mechanisms and the evolution of microstructure and texture in the uniaxial tension of AZ31 magnesium alloy with a rare non-basal texture was investigated using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) measurement and visco-plastic self-consistent (VPSC) modeling. The results showed that both basal and prismatic slip, as well as extension twin, played significant roles in plastic deformation. The activity of the extension twin decreased with the increasing angle between the loading and rolling directions, and its role shifted from sustaining plastic strain to accommodating local strain between grains. The different roles of the extension twin resulted in the formation of different texture components. The competition between basal and pyramidal slip was responsible for the concentration of tilted basal poles towards the normal direction. VPSC modeling overestimated the volume fractions of the extension twin, and the predicted results were smaller when compatible deformation between grains was not considered.

Tension-compression asymmetry and the underlying slip/twinning activity in extruded Mg - Y sheets

D. D. Yin et al.

Summary: The addition of different concentrations of Y significantly affected the mechanical properties, grain-scale slip activity, and orientation heterogeneity of extruded Mg alloys during tension and compression. Increasing Y content led to noticeable changes in slip activity, while tension-compression asymmetry also showed variations.

Towards developing Mg alloys with simultaneously improved strength and corrosion resistance via RE alloying

Jinshu Xie et al.

Summary: Magnesium alloys have great application potential, but improvements in both strength and corrosion resistance are still needed. The addition of rare earth elements can enhance the performance of magnesium alloys, but further research is necessary to improve both strength and anti-corrosion properties.

Anomalous Tension Twinning Activity in Extruded Mg Sheet During Hard-Orientation Loading at Room Temperature

Y. Q. Chai et al.

Summary: The study found that surface twins in a strongly basal-textured Mg sheet deformed under tension exhibit tension twins, with a significant number showing negative Schmid factor and Luster-Morris parameter values. The twinning behavior was more dependent on local conditions than globally applied stress, limiting correlations between m and m'.
