The production of wax esters in transgenic plants: \ntowards a sustainable source of bio-lubricants

Frederic Domergue et al.

Summary: Wax esters are valuable compounds used in the production of lubricants, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics, currently mostly produced by chemical synthesis from fossil reserves. Metabolic engineering of plants, especially the seed storage lipid metabolism of oil crops, offers a promising strategy for renewable and environmentally friendly wax ester production tailored to industrial applications. Researchers are exploring the utilization of wax ester-synthesizing enzymes and genetic engineering approaches to obtain desired wax esters compositions and properties.

Lipases of germinating jojoba seeds efficiently hydrolyze triacylglycerols and wax esters and display wax ester-synthesizing activity

Adam Kawinski et al.

Summary: In this study, the mobilization of storage reserves during jojoba seed germination was monitored and the jojoba lipases were characterized. The research found that the activity of jojoba lipases increased in the first 50 days of germination, with higher activity towards triacylglycerols than towards wax esters. Additionally, the enzymes showed wax ester-synthesizing activity in the backward reaction.

Green Chemistry Production of Codlemone, the Sex Pheromone of the Codling Moth (Cydia pomonella), by Metabolic Engineering of the Oilseed Crop Camelina (Camelina sativa)

Yi-Han Xia et al.

Summary: Synthetic pheromones have been widely used in pest control for many years, with Camelina emerging as an ideal platform for producing moth sex pheromone precursors. By introducing specific genes, researchers were able to increase the production levels of these pheromone precursors and successfully attract male moths in orchards and home gardens.

Evolution of the codling moth pheromone via an ancient gene duplication

Jean-Marc Lassance et al.

Summary: This study identified the role of the FAD gene family in the biosynthesis of sex pheromones in the codling moth, revealing wide distribution and diverse expression patterns of FAD genes in the genome. The gene Cpo_CPRQ, exclusively expressed in the female pheromone gland, was found to encode an FAD with unique desaturation activities. The evolution of the signature pheromone structure in olethreutine moths was shown to depend on an ancient gene expansion.

Biosynthesis of the Sex Pheromone Component (E,Z)-7,9-Dodecadienyl Acetate in the European Grapevine Moth, Lobesia botrana, Involving increment 11 Desaturation and an Elusive increment 7 Desaturase

Bao-Jian Ding et al.

Summary: The European grapevine moth uses (E,Z)-7,9-dodecadienyl acetate as its main sex pheromone component. Research has shown that this doubly unsaturated pheromone component is produced through specific metabolic pathways of fatty acids. Further analysis of the transcriptome and genes involved in the synthesis of sex pheromones revealed multiple candidate genes that may play a role in this process.
