Associations of sedentary behavior bouts with community-dwelling older adults' physical function

Jason J. Wilson et al.

Summary: The study found that older adults who spent less time in prolonged sedentary bouts were associated with better physical function, while those who had fewer prolonged sedentary bouts were associated with shorter chair stand time and longer unipedal stance time. Mixed associations were found between 10- to 29-minute sedentary bouts and physical function in older adults.

Summary: Higher levels of physical activity and reduced sedentary behavior in older adults are associated with better upper and lower body muscle strength and muscle power. These associations are particularly significant in the chair stand test.

Associations between physical function and device-based measures of physical activity and sedentary behavior patterns in older adults: moving beyond moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity

Rod L. Walker et al.

Summary: This study found associations between physical function and activity metrics other than MVPA among older adults, with steps showing a significant relationship with physical function in adults aged 75+. The study also found that worse function was more pronounced in participants with the lowest levels of MVPA. These findings support research on broader activity patterns for improving function in older adults.
